wiring alternator and starter?
Think I'm going to need some help on the wiring. I have a internally regulated alternator; it has two female plug connectors on the housing. Each connector has three connections inside. What wire goes where???
Starter question: I have #109 and #110 hooked up to the battery side of the solenoid. The other side of the soleniod is connected to the starter. What connects to the other small stud on the starter? Is #189 used for anything? I have not wired the MSD ignition box yet. I know that I'll be asking more questions. It's coming along great, just need to be careful with this wiring stuff. Thanks Charlie |
Charlie, what type alternator are you using? Wire # 189 will not be used unless you are using the stock Ford ignition box. Wire # 126 goes to the other terminal on the solenoid. The MSD system is easy to wire up. Let me know when you are ready.

Don ,the alternator is a ford. I believe the Part no. is # 7716. The MSD 6AL is mounted and ready for wiring. I see a red and black wire comming out of the distributor; assembly book says #185,#186,and #187 go to the distributor???Do I need a ballast resister? If not, what do you do with #128 and #138 wires?
Thanks Charlie |
Charlie, I forgot to ask what type of distributor you have. Give me that and then I'll tell you how to wire everything.

Don, what I have is the 405hp,351w from the engine factory. It has a electronic distributor. I really don't know much more about it . I can give Chris a call at the Engine Factory if you need more info. Thanks again for your help, always appreciated.

Charlie, I'm not sure which alternator you have so I can't help with that. The MSD 6AL can be wired as follows.
large black wire to ground large red wire to batt + or circuit breaker on firewall small red to wire # 128 (ignition) white wire is not used green and purple twisted pair to distributor small orange to coil + small black to coil - wire# 132 to tach output on the 6AL you don't need a ballast, you will not use wire #138,185,186,187, or 189. you can tape them off. If the distributor is an MSD it will plug in direct to the 6AL twisted pair. If it's a Ford it will have 3 wires, orange, purple and black. The black is not used. The green from the 6AL goes to the purple on the dist., the purple from the 6AL goes to the orange on the dist. Don |
