Coil over front suspension
 
When I reassembled the front suspension I didn't know the springs needed to be shortened. Now I know and it also explains why it took me about one week to get the springs in...

To solve this problem I want to install adjustable hight coil overs.


Any thoughts or recommendations?

From a couple of guys that have used that kit, it seems to work quite well. I went with the QA1 setup because I wanted the 12 way adjustable rebound. But they are somewhat more pricy than that kit is and did require a little machine work to make the top shock mount work correctly.

I think you will have to purchase or fabricate an additional bracket at the top for mounting to your "mount ears", since this is designed to mount as vertical shock bolt thru a horizontal mount hole.
The springs are "sorta progressive" and will also possibly need a sway bar on the lighter 375# ones, but actually depends on your driving desires.

I ordered a set of these back in August from Fatman Fabrications.($370 delivered) They are still on backorder........ Carerra was bought out by QA1 and it seems that production has slowed to a crawl.

That's the first thing I hear about these coil overs that doesn't sound good ;-)

I hope I'll get them during the winter months to have the Cobra ready to go next spring...

The stock Mustang II shocks won't work if you use the stock mount on the car. You need a shock that has a longer stroke. You can remove the small tower on the car and weld in a mount at chassis level to fix the problem and use a stock shock. We are doing this on our new frames. I never understood the extra 4" because it serves no purpose. I use the 375# springs with the small block engines and the 500# springs for the big blocks. You can order the proper shocks with the stem mount. I've always used Carrera but since they were bought out by QA1 I haven't been able to get them. I've been using Pro-Shocks with good luck. They are not adjustable though.

FWIW, the 4" upper "ear" was because the CR factory shock was not a stock MII, but a Monroe for a '70 full size GM. The Carerras, a little stiff at first, have been working fine.

Purchased lower control arms, and Carerra coil over kits from RCC in Ft. Worth, TX. RCC was very familiar with CR front suspension, and the shocks came with upper shock extensions to fit CR ears.

The single largest improvement that made friends with my alignment shop was Tom Beroths upper control arm bracket. Alignment could be set with shims, GM style, and stayed put afterwards.

Some improvements at the frame level that you might want to think about Don, would be to incorporate these brackets or mounting points for pper control arms onto the frame, and mounting points for strutless lower control arms.
