I have been looking at my front hood hinge with the big round bar between the two mounts. I assume that it is iron. It's gotta weigh about 487 lbs. How about you make one out of aluminum? My gut feel is that we would save about 4 lbs off the front end.

C'mon now, I just weighed it and it comes in at 486.75 lbs. So it's not as heavy as you thought. You must have used that heavy paint on yours.
Actually I have been looking at that hinge and how to change it. I haven't come up with anything yet. Any ideas other than aluminum. Don |

Let's just melt down several hundred of those new comp distributor gears and cast one from them!... Let's see now.... $100 per gear....100 or so gears.......

Take your hood hinge to Jensen Manufacturing in Alexandria (right off Duke St.), tell them to make you one in aluminum. They won't look at you funny when you tell them it's for a Cobra. If you want to trim 100# off your front end, get rid of the stock MII rack. That puppy is all cast iron, and weighs a ton. |

I put on a new Flaming River rack a few years ago because the old MII one that came on the car was worn. I see in Jegs and Summit, that there are aluminum hub lightweight race brakes that would save about 30lbs when compared to the cast iron MII hubs. But I am not in the mood to spend $500 for them at this time. Does anyone make tubular control arms for the MII ? I could fill all 4 tires with helium and save .5 lbs :rolleyes: Ed |
Tubular control arms for MII? Seems like everyone makes tubulars for the MII. Very popular street rod suspension. Thumb through Street Rod magazine and look at the selection.
I'm using Heidts "D" uppers, and RCC lowers. Retained strut rod, but used polyurethane bushings on the strut rod to frame mount. Coil overs are Carerra, also from RCC. Think yours truly Don Scott has one-stop-shopping on these setups now too. |
I just bought a complete set of uppers and lowers for my car from Pole Position and am thrilled with what I got. The complete package was around $750, but I also got a kit for doing complete alignment from them as well. The fellow there was extremely helpful and I called about 6 or 7 times to get everything right. He didn't get upset at all!lol

We do sell all types of different suspensions for the Mustang II. We are in the process of making our own tubular uppers and lowers. Strut and strutless type lowers. New spindles, racks, and everything else you would need. My prices are good too!

One more thing. Some folks have no problems with this, but I did. Setting, and maintaining front end alignment on the MII. Slides all over the place. Front end guys hate these things! Tom Beroth makes an upper control arm bracket that lets you setup the front end with shims like a GM car. Don, are you selling these? DV had a steering column setup for the CR that did away with the Chevette upper, and cheapo u-weld-it lower, and muffler clamp to the firewall. Did you take this over from DV Don? I used an Ididit column, Borgeson collapsable lowers and joints, and a muffler clamp on the firewall. It works, it's tight, can't see the muffler clamp, and looks decent. But was pricy. A power steering kit from one source would be nice too. |
