Air cleaners
I hate to bring this subject up again. The guys around my shop beat this to death and it has caused me to have to paint the inside of my hood AGAIN !
Without regard to micro tenths of performance. I am past the point of caring. What air cleaners are you guys using that clear the hood with a 351 and victor JR. I was using a 9 inch K&N with the extreme top but the Superformance weenies have me convinced I am starving the motor. So four air cleaners later and 300 bucks of hood scratches I am back to the K&N. Any suggestions? |

I've got a 2.5 X 13 inch Motorcraft filter (FA-612R, just like the SPF article recommends) that has lots of room atop my dual plane manifold. Bob |
Holley float bowl adjustment
I am in the process of adjusting the float bowl on a Holley 4150,750HP.
I know the screw is the lock and the nut raises and lowers the float. But no where can I fine which way to turn to raise the fuel level or to lower it. I assume you turn it clockwise to lower the level of fuel, and the reverse to raise it. But you know what they say about "assuming" Anyone know? |
sorry ment to post a new thread.

I am running a 9" K&N with the extreme top on a 427 and holly 750. This setup gets way more air than the Hellings and Stellings 9" that was on there. Paul |
MNSI thanks that is all I needed .I ran high 12's with this set up at the track witha stock 351 crate motor and I was happy with that level of performance. The Superformance news letter put everyone in my crew in a tailspin concerning there stellings set up. I got caught up in the need for speed. Once I get the hood back from the painter I won't be messing with a good thing again.

1 5/8 drop base. 14 inch x 2.5 inch filter, Extreme Top. Leaves about a 1/4 inch clearance on the sides in my case
|
I am switching to the 9 inch K&N, in the near future. It flows plenty with the max top.
I have been using the 10" model a lot of people use. Any more and I will have to paint the inside of my hood. It is not the standing height that kills, it's the rocking of the engine as you show-off. The air cleaner just touches the hood. Try using clay or playdooh to check for clearance. |

Check my gallery out for more photos. I had the set up you mentioned and used the K + N filter top and side. There was just enough clearance if you use a dropped base under the filter. This photo is from page three (3) of the gallery. Taken prior to the Cobra being painted. I have just replaced the manifold with an Edelbrock Performer so will try and user the new Cobra oval unit and new Cobra Rocker covers. Read this entire thread.... I posted some photos there and it worked fine for me....might for you as well...
Cobra air filter mod |
Thanks , I am going to have to play around with this set up . I had the misfortune of running my car on a Dyno this weekend and the 9 inch K&N did cause a sharp decrease in HP to the wheels. I lost ten to the rear wheels and the air fuel was also better with no air filter. I am tuning for giggle juice so everything must be 100 percent. The motor is just not that stout to throw away ten HP on the motor. If I pull the spacer plate from the nitous I have no clearance problems but these dam vets out of the box are getting faster and faster.
I don't believe my problem will be better with and offset. I am going to try a combination of different drop bases. The look of some of these circle track foam set ups might be considered ugly but thats life. |
