front and rear sway bars
When I bought my cobra kit car I was dealing with Pete and when I mentioned about buying the front and rear sway bar kits he said I will not require them on this kit . I,m building a BBF version of the CR II cobra which has a frame built around 1998 .:confused: Is there anyone out there that is driving the cobra without front and rear sway bars , and if so does it handle well ?
I,m a mechanic by trade and I have not heard of a vehicle without sway bars , at least up front ! |

Here's the gist...The front sway bar that did come with the kit is about 2 and 1/2 times the size it should be. This was professsionally tested on a very professional private track, (Hondas') and of course a very professional driver. Per him and others on the team suggested I either get a front sway bar about the 1/3 of the original one, or unhook it completely. This was one of my Double Venoms and they pulled very, very close to 2.Gs on the skid pad without a front sway bar. That is almost in the formula range! However strange it may appear with such a light rear end, the rear bar was an absolute! Somebody correct me if I am wrong but I have always heard the rear sway bar was off of a Bronco II? What ever it is, it bolted directly to the rear arms without any modifications. Well, that's another 2c's worth... DV |

Pete told me the same thing when I bought the coil over and A-arm conversion kit. He said it would ride too stiff. I left it on because I was sceptical. I have no idea how to remove it at this point, except to cut it in half. DV, Do you recomend removing the front sway bar and leave it at that, or is it necessary to replace it with a smaller one? Does a BB vs. a SB have any bearing? John |
I've been confused about this issue of sway bars. My cobra is rock solid & have been trying to loosen, the ride. I believe most cobras has a hard ride being a short wheel base, very light weight, short drive shaft, low articulation and shock travel, ect.
My car does not have much of body roll so, if most of us have this type of ride, why does anyone need them ? I have heard a few people say here on cc that, they improved the ride but, why & how ? Someone please explain. (good thread hisss snake) Thanks, |
I can see where they might improve handling characteristics by adjusting the understeer/oversteer, but I have trouble envisioning how they would improve the "ride".
Perhaps someone with a softly sprung IRS or 3-link has so much body roll they're bottoming the outside suspension..... |
I'm getting ready to add a rear sway bar to my car. I do have the Jag IRS and on hard corners, my 295 50 16s will rub the inside of the fender well. Body roll on my car is fairly significant if I push it hard enough. I've been told by virtually everyone who has gone from no rear bar to adding one that the benefit is quite noticible. Uniques have the front bar standard, so I don't know what it's like to not have one in the front.
