Gee CobraEd, I never even thought of that catastrophy. I have the center latch with the turn handles. Kinda redundant but if you don't know where to pull the cable from you can't open the hood, like DV said it keeps out the uninvited. Now if the cable breaks I'm screwed.

If I may, may I stop this on-line panic mode about the steel cable (or other parts) breaking on the inside hood latch? Personally I have lost count on the hood latches -installed correctly- and later-now up to ten years later or more, I have never had one break....BUT- If the system becomes unusable for any reason, go through the right vent! I assumed you/the builder used caulk to put the vent in place? Wiggle it loose, shove it to the inside and hey- you can reach the original hood box! You can take it apart through the vent-use a needle nosed vice grip-pair of pliers and pull the remaining cable to open....Cutting hoods to get open is NOT an option! :) DV |
Prop rods
Yes,
Count me in as interested in the stainless hood and trunk prop rods if they will work on a 91 (not shortened) CR. I have been using a 3 wood for the hood and a 5 iron for the trunk. They work better for me there than they do on the course. Jim |

Lot of Corvette guys had your same concern, Ed. It was pretty common to run a secondary pull wire that you could reach from under the car. Note that Corvettes have two latches, so it was more likely to happen with these.

I like DV's don't panic attitude. I was looking at the assembly with another local CR owner at our tri-county club get together this weekend and saw that the latch receiving end was bolted to the firewall/body in a manner that the 4 bolts could be removed from under the dash and popped out. Hence lifting the whole assembly upwards. The only hitch was the receiver has a flange on the top that could interlock with the lip of the fiberglass body where it comes over the firewall. I'm not saying it would be easy, but between that and the side vent access there are options other than cutting. Keeping the whole assembly properly lubed will ease the operation of opening and closing the hood. My cable run is very short with the pull centered under the dash fwiw.

I never realized that all the Corvettes had the same potential problem with the rear latch. That is how many millions of cars. Maybe I just worry too much.
DV, I still like your exterior dual latch solution. How are the handles mounted to the hood??? Little self taping screws, or bolted all the way thru??? Obviously, you dont want that handle rocking on the hood under the presure of the hood trying to move around when driving. . |
