DV....Side pipe question

I built my CR back in 2000 and I still am so grateful to you for all the great technical support you so graciously gave to us back then. I must say I have just been driving my car since and have not been on the forums much. It is just great to see you still involved.
O.K.......back in 2000 you were replacing the muffler part of the original CR side pipe with something that had quite a lot less restriction and added a lot more H.P. I sent you my pipes and you did the mod for me which worked absolutely wonderful. At the time you gave me 3 options I believe....one was fairly quiet,2 was middle of the road and 3 was a serious bark. I chose the middle of the road option which sounds really good and does have a bit of a bark which I know a Cobra should.......although......as I get a little older I do believe I would like to tame it down a bit by making it a little quieter.
With all that said, my question is....can I make what I have a little quieter or do you have a set of side pipes you would sell that would be "fairly quiet" or.????
I now have the pipes you built for me chromed. I don't really care if I loose a little horsepower. I have a 351W bored and strocked to 422c.i. with 460 h.p. and 500 ft lbs of torque on the dyno so it is plenty enough for this old guy.
I would very much appreciate your thoughts regarding options for me
Thanks, Brian

Brian...
Nice to talk to you again!
I'm sort of out of the sidepipe business these days-after I sold my original business, but I'm sure you can have someone make a set for you. Find a good streetrod shop (net or in person) find out if they have any tubular exhausts? I suspect your pipes are now getting a little burned out which may actually make them 'bark' a little louder than they used to!

Save the front four tubes of course AND the rear mounting tab that bolts to the frame and have them weld you a new and Milder sounding ( :) )center tube in place

Would there be a way to install some sort of baffle that you have ever seen?
You wouldn't by chance have an old original set of side pipes for CR that you would like to sell?
One more question for you if you don't mind....
I would like to install cruise control......is there one in particular that you would recommend??? I have the Chevette column.
Thanks

Brian,
PM sent.

DV, do you remember what you did to Brians exhaust? I believe the pipes on my car are CR original. 3" od with 1 3/4 od collectors. They look small compared to other cobras in town, mostly with 3 1/2" and 2" collector pipes. I am interested in an unrestricted muffler upgrade for hp and tq gains. Any thoughts? I have the FE 390 with stock iron heads.

Brian,
Not without cutting one end of the pipe off and the cost at that point would be more than new "bullitts".

John...Of course I do! You think I'm old or something :D ?
If you are using CR's stock exhaust you can -will- gain at least 27 hp. at the wheels and close to 35 lbs of torque. Huge numbers for any type of single, relatively cheap engine upgrade.

John a company called (and located) "Arizona custom exhausts" used to make the side pipe bullitts for me. Kind of like a "cherry bombs" but not. These were steel lined made with innerds packed with burn out proof fiberglass cloth-straight through, no restrictions and actually a little narrower than CR's stock pipes.
A.C.E., sold out and the owner retired.....that's the last I remember/heard of them.

many years ago during the whole CR muffler quagmire threads, I discover Lucien Donofro the owner of Arizona exhaust. He made the glasspacks for J C Whitney. I had him make me two stainless steel (the first he had ever made) glasspacks for my CR. The stainless matches my chrome header pipe and outlet pipe exactly. No one knows that the two ends are chrome and that the muffler is stainless. I used stainless band clamps for a perfect match. I paid $29 each for these mufflers from Lucien. Unbelievable. They are 4" OD with 3" pipes and muffler ID. Too bad he has retired !!!

I picked up a ton of HP & Torque. Day and night difference.

Cobra Ed!
So your the guy! :) All day long I was trying to remember "Luiciens" name and who he made the stainless pipes for? Yep. that's how we found Lucien, via JC Whitney-long, long story but that's how we found him!
When he retired he made me a lazer cut Cobra in a 1-1/2 x 3" piece of crystal. Absolutely beautifull and still sits on my desk.

That's one guy that retired before "we", the Cobra family really found out about him! Hope he is doing well!

DV,
Thanks for your input.
I'm so glad you are still here for us.
Tell me, are you still doing Cobra's and Rods full time?

Thanks for the great links.
Although I must say for those of us building our cars 10 years ago you couldn't beat the pipes DV would build!
I thank you Ed for being a "Master" at your craft and hope you can continue to enjoy doing it for many years to come.
