My CR has a hydraulic system. I can't say I haven't had a couple master cylinder rebuilds but I can say I have never broken a cable. I know I'm not much help, sorry. It seems that your cable might be wearing from friction or stress at that point. Can you lubricate it or give it a longer sweep?

I have the cable system on mine and it has been problem free for 22k miles.
Knock on wood. I haven't had it apart for a few years but don't recall any
pinch or kink points in my set up.

That is the exact problem. It has been put through the firewall at an improper angle. Slightly wrong but it was wrong. If you get a new one and have it run through in the correct geometry AND the round "eye" is free to move when the cable is pushed, it wont break for 100,000 miles, really! I have truly replaced a dozen of them and everyone one,the geometry was wrong.
Us the same OEM Ford cable-re-align it and you should never have to replace it!
DV
PS The part numbers Terry supplied via "Spanky" are correct-NAPA has great replacement cables; 1979 Mustang 302 cable D9ZZ-7K553-B or Napa # 615-1008.
