Considering Undercar Exhaust on my CR

I did a search and got zero hits in the Classic Cobra area. Is it not possible for some reason to install an undercar exhaust on the CR??

After reading quite a bit about the undercar exhausts, and me being an old guy anyway, I kinda like the idea of saving what hearing I have left and, have to admit, I kinda like the styling a little better without the side exhaust.

Any info would be appreciated.

I can't see why a competent exhaust shop couldn't do it. there should be adequate space under there.

Do it, if you've got any under car shots of your frame I'd be happy to advise. I also have quite a few undercar exhaust shots of cars and parts if you want any. I love the street car look and I've heard a lot of guys complain about the side exit exhaust right by their ears.

My wife complains when it burns her calf.... If it wasn't for the fact that I like I sound and look I would probably do it myself.

My 2-cents;

Obvious problem is ground clearance, especially with a 'dropped' floor pan, but I think that could be overcome. Second and in my opinion the biggest problem is the headers... I think you could still use the CR's headers but they would have to be very carefully modified. Even with that, the "suggested" 4 inch ground clearance would be cut to probably around 2 inches. ???

I'd like to try it once.......but no guarantees. Bending and fabricating the exhaust is the easy part! Making it legal with the exhaust pipes going over the rear axle would be a great challange for the best 'bender'!

BUT, if you could find a set of stock exhaust manifolds that would work in the extreme confines of the frame to motor area I think it could be done quite easily. I once gave consideration to using Explorer manifolds- they hug the block and transistion quickly to the exhaust pipes, but the owner of said car changed his mind and went with sidepipes.

No change needed!

Well, no one seems to be saying it can't be done, so I'm going to plan for it. I have an older kit (slats) which I don't believe has the lowered floor, and I'm also going to be using a 347 instead of the usual 351, so I think I'll gain a little room around the headers (not as wide).

Thanks again for the feedback.

Hi Motorcitycobra!
Go for the rear exhaust. I am glad I did. I can still hear somewhat and my wife can't burn herself LOL 'cause if she did she would hate the car. We love cruising together.

Thanks, JB

Actually, I ran across a pic of your car a while back that got me thinking in this direction... a nice, clean design.

Thank you much Motorcitycobra!
A lot of people have told me they like the simpleness of the lines.
The way I drive I need it a stealthy as possible too! LOL

Headers

There are a number of companies out there making block hugger headers for Ford smallblock engines. Speedway motors catalog shows all the dimensions for theirs but I would not recommend getting coated headers from them cause the coating peels off, at least that was my experience.

I love my under car exhaust it keeps my legs from getting burned and keeps the noise out back so i can hear a passanger if the are screaming like a little girl when i get on it hard.........i used the short glass pack mufflers from Summit part#sum-630805 with a 2.5 in@out 18" long and my local muffler shop did a great job of keeping everything up off the pavement. Will be happy to send pictures if needed..........

Ok... thanks for the input. I'll plan on trying the hugger headers first... but I'm not sure I'll have clearance for the coated ones (extra couple of thou). (Just kidding)
