302 starter, different length noses?
I have searched here for an hour and did not find answer.,
The starter on my 302 is bolted up to a borg warner 5 speed, do not know anything else about it as of now, the nose seems to be too short, only looks like about an 1/8 of inch of teeth are engaging if that much. is there a difference in auto trans starter and stick starter. or the newer 5 speed stick trans. Yes there is a difference, also bases upon tooth count of the flywheel. Go to Tiltons site. They will provide some very good information, but you must know what flywheel you have to make the correct choice.

You have a flex plate starter with a manual (clutch) flywheel.

My first starter was an Autozone generic for a 302 Mustang with a 4 spd. Once and a while the starter would not fully engage (grinding). I switched to a Powermaster 9162 which is for 302's with a 5 spd and haven't had any problems.

302/351-W starters have two different "nose lengths". The one for an automatic trans being the shorter of the two, sometimes it will barely engage a standard trans. flywheel and sometimes it will not,depends on the bellhousing............either way, get the correct one for your application........
I was given one for an auto trans and it would not engage the flywheel, brought it back and the other guy checked and said first guy gave me the wrong starter, he got one for a standard trans. and putting them side by side you can see a distinct difference in the nose length.........from then on, I always specify the trans. type when getting a starter........... david |

Thanks for the help, i went to parts store and we found a 79 stang 302 with stick, and got that starter, compared it and brought it home, seems to work perfect.
