To Powdercoat Wheels Or Not

I am debating powdercoating my wheels a flat black on my 289 FIA Cobra. I am thinking this look will be more the original magnesium black look of the comp cars in this time frame versus the shiny current look.

I know I can do a rattle can Plasti Dip temporary look or have it professionally done. I am more looking for how the members feel about originality if I did or did not Powdercoat them?

I'm contemplating similar questions. I happened to have a spare tire/wheel hanging around in the garage that goes with my set of PS engineering wheels. I am also curious about platidip, so I figure I can experiment with this wheel. Just the other day I plopped down my $6 for a can of black PlastiDip at Home Depot and got started. I applied 5 coats (not too heavy) waiting 15-20 minutes between coats with the fan on them. Application was relatively easy and I didn't experience any runs. I was surprised how much I like the look! Just the right amount of gloss and good coverage.

I'm going to let it sit in my garage over the winter and then possibly do some "testing" with it in the spring to see how durable it is with various possible contamination I will subject it to. I'm also curious how difficult it will be to remove. I think the trick is the more coats you apply the easier it will be to remove. If it removes easily enough with some finger nail plucking and my pressure washer I think this will be a good way to experiment with different looks for your wheels for very little money.

Yes 66 I could see them. That is the direction I am,pondering is to,do,the whole wheel versus just one part of it.

Easiest would be to do all 4 wheels right up to the tire. The easiest removal will be on the rim section, and I figure it will be easier to remove than to tape off. Do one side exposing the rim and the other side of the car black to the tire. Drive around for a while gathering your thoughts and opinions if you wish. You will soon enough know which one you like better. :MECOOL:
