Build log DU WISH

So this is it the thread in wich I will ask a million questions, post a million pics,
and document the build of project DU WISH.

Some of you will allready recognize this car. Yes it is the burnt Cobra up in Canada. I have yet to contact the original owner. I have not decided wether I need/ want to.
The name project DU WISH came from the plate that will eventually end up on the car. The plate was puchased back in 96 for my 68 firebird ( my first car) it has never been on a car since 98 when we sold the bird. My father and I restored that car together and now we are rebuilding this car together.

History on the "Cobra"

It is a Johnex roadster built sometime around 05. It was in a garage fire west of Toronto. Most of the damage was to the wiring, interior and the body.
We are well under way and I have posted a few pics that I will re post here just so that every one that is following the build can catch up.

Please refrain from posting if you feel that this car should have been crushed.
The fire was around the car and the foam and inner fibre glass had no damage what so ever. The powder coat on the frame was in perfect condition.

Now for the pictures
Here is the car as it was delivered to my dads garage on Dec 29 2009

Here are a few of the tear down.
Note the spray foam, we all know if it was that hot the foam would have been melted. And yes it was alot of work to clean of all the sut.

Jan 1 2010 Happy new year

Not to bad for a weeks work.

Clutt gt 01-30-2010 05:03 PM

It was too cold to continue at Dads. So we had the car towed to my house.
Not as much room but atleast I have heat.
We have done alot of cleaning and a bit of painting. The brakes were all rebuilt. New rear shocks. The rims and tires are 10,000km take offs from my 02 stang.
the carb has been rebuilt. And we are still cleaning parts.

:D The body is on order with deposit paid. Yes we found the original Johnex chasis builder less than an hr from home and he has the contacts to get us a Johnex body. Should be here in six weeks or so.

G'day Clutt gt.

My hat is off to you! I really admire the fact that you've turned what some people would see as an impossibility into a challenge for your dad and yourself.

It's always saddened me to see classic an unique vehicles being hauled away to the wreckers when they've reached their use by date or suffer a fate similar to yours.

Thanks for starting your build thread, I'll certainly be following it.

Cheers.

Steve.

Great work. Keep the pics and updates coming! Pay particular attention to corrosion protection on all steel parts as you clean up and rebuild. You may even want to drill some access holes into sections of the frame to allow you to spray in some oxidation retardant.

Ron61 01-31-2010 05:06 AM

What you are doing is great and it looks as if the car is coming along well. It is nice that you could find a person who could help you get the new body. As Buzz said, keep the pictures coming as I too enjoy watching progress made on a build, especially one like you had to start with. Best of luck and you will have a great Cobra when finished.

Ron ;)

All that hard work will lead to much enjoyment when finished............

Found some seats from a TR7 today a a local wreckers. Very comfortable and fit nice. Just need to recover.
http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/l...erCobra007.jpg

Once we had the seats in we have noticed a lack of room in the foot well. I'm now working on opening that up a lil.

Clutt gt 07-23-2010 07:28 PM

Its been a while since my last update. All though the work has not stopped for more than a week end or two.

We found a Johnex body through CSC racing.
http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/l...odypics003.jpg

The body mounted up with no major issues.
http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/l...obramay004.jpg

The money shot. And yes we have it running.
http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/l...obramay007.jpg

Clutt gt 07-23-2010 07:34 PM

The air cleaner we chose did not clear the factory style hood scoop.
Really not sure what type would, as the carb was less than an inch away.
http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/l...reather003.jpg

When in doubt Google. And build your own hood.

And here it is at home back on the car and ready for hardware.

Clutt gt 07-23-2010 07:36 PM

We are working on the mock up of the lights and other hardware before we get to far into the body work.

Had some great Kudos along the way.
Here is the link to the local Mustang club that I have been a part of since buying my 2002 gt vert in may 2008. This covers the thread in depth right from day one. Dec 29 2009.

http://www.gtamc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77700

I was contacted by stangtv.com about the project and they felt it was worthy of a lil story.

Just thought I would share some of the excitement that we have had along the way.

Very impressive rebuild! You really brought one back from the grave.

Avmaviator 03-07-2011 09:02 AM

What an awesome "revival"! Very well done. I know the dash still needs to come in but have you driven it at all yet? What tranny is in there?

Clutt gt 03-07-2011 01:04 PM

We have not finished the wire harness yet. So no real shake down runs yet. Although I did have the car running and driving without the body on.
Just up and down the drive way never out of second.
Drive train is 351W full roller stroker, with Tremec 3550 5spd hydraulic clutch, 308 gear.
Can't wait to take her on a shake down run

Clutt gt 07-07-2012 03:01 PM

Ok so I'm a lil behinde on the thread here.
We are on the road now. Still have some issues to work out but man what a car.
In the last few years my dad and I have had the pleasure of owning and driving some pretty sweet muscle cars new and old. From the likes of a 71 lt1, 2007 C6,
2002 Z06, 69 Mach 1, 2002 mustang gt vert, and more.
Nothing even comes close to this little beast. It's raw it's mean, it's loud, it's hot, its impractical in so many ways. It's everything It need to be and nothing more.
Did I mention it's pretty dam quick too.
We still need to finish the carpet and seats. But we did it the burnt Cobra is alive and well.
