Side indicator light position
 

Hello guys,

I have a beautiful BDR Cobra that I built in south-africa. I've enjoyed it a couple of years, but now i'm relocating to europe (The Netherlands).
The regulations require me to install side indicator lights (orange), to get it road registered. I'm going to use the 'ferarri' side indicator lights which are nice and small.

However.. For the life of me, i cant decide where to put them. They always look out of place, obviously. Where do I put them with respect to the grill/vents.

Anyone have any good looking examples?

I would incorporate a high brightness amber LED into the rear outside of the mirrors. Your mirrors are higher than your front guards, and your need that for other cars to see your side indicator.

If you are really good, the lamp could be made not that obvious until it is required to flash.

Would it be possible to incorporate them in the grills themselves?

Hey Gaz64, great minds think alike! Here's 2 I prepared earlier... not yet fitted to my car, but I have powered them up. I wasn't keen on the idea of having side marker lights in the body of the car, so I thought... why not apply a modern idea? I found the lights on Ebay. They were about 20 bucks for 4. They are 22mm round with a clear lens and amber led.

And won't stand out like a sore thumb, ;).

I guess just duct taping them on for the inspection, and then taking them off later that day, is out of the question? That's how we do it here in the states.:cool:

Hey Patrick, in Australia, if you do that, and get caught, they fine you, beat you with a telephone book, take you out the back and poke things into your orifices, then confiscate your car. :LOL:

I like the side indicators integrated in the mirrors. Is not difficult to do, but the wiring would be a bit inconvenient (in my case).
My mirrors are mounted to the window sill, so i'd have to find a way to route that down into the body.
Doable though... I like it, let me sleep on it a bit :-)

I was thinking on putting them in the 'gills' with some temporary clamp etc.. but i'm not sure how bad the police will be if I get caught. Pretty similar to the aussies i'm thinking.

How about inside the side vents? You'll see the lights when they turn on.

Not sure if it'll pass inspection, but technically it's there..

CATEGORIES OF DIRECTION INDICATORS:

MINIMUM ANGLES REQUIRED FOR LIGHT DISTRIBUTION IN SPACE OF THESE CATEGORIES OF DIRECTION INDICATORS 1/

In all cases, the minimum vertical angles of light distribution in space of direction indicators are 15 degrees above and 15 degrees below the horizontal, in the case of direction indicators of category 6 however they are 30 degrees above and 5 degrees below the horizontal.

Minimum horizontal angles of light distribution in space:

Categories 1, 1 a and 1 b: direction indicators for the front of the vehicle:

Category 1: for use at a distance not less than 40 mm from the headlamp;

Category 1a: for use at a distance greater than 20 mm but less than 40 mm from the headlamp;

Cateqory 1b: for use at a distance less than 20 mm from the headlamp.



Category 2a: Direction indicators with one level of intensity for the rear of the vehicle.

Category 2b: Direction indicators with two levels of intensity for the rear of the vehicle.






Category 3: Front-side direction indicators for use on a vehicle equipped with this category of direction indicator only.





Category 4: Front-side direction indicators for use on a vehicle also equipped with category 2a or 2b direction indicators.



Cateaories 5 and 6: Supplementary side direction indicators for use on a vehicle also equipped with categories 1, 1a or 1 b and 2a or 2b direction indicators.
