Clutch recommendations for a 289 with a top loader

Hi everyone,

Going through the process of getting the 289 race engine refreshed and was considering upgrading the clutch. Currently using a McLeod single disc. Was wanting to go to a Tilton, but they do not make a clutch for a 10 spline top loader application.

What are you guys with top loaders mated to a 289 using? I have 424 HP and 362 ft lbs of torque. Need something heavy duty as most of my shifting is at between 6500-7200 rpms.

I have a 157 tooth aluminum flywheel.

Thanks.

Jim

Jim, the clutches I use for my 289 FIA engines are just a single disc McLeod, usually a 10" diameter. My engines make 450 hp and 400 lb-ft with factory heads, going between 6500-7500 rpm.

The Quartermaster stuff is nice, but the only kit they have for a small input Toploader size is a 10.5" kit.

Thanks guys. I am going to pull the bellhousing and pressure plate to verify the size of the clutch. It has not been slipping or doing anything funny, but it has been in for 3 1/2 years with of racing and I would rather change it our early, than have it go at the track.

I took a look at the Quarter Master stuff and it looked nice, there were a couple of Ford options. I will also revisit McLeod as well.

I currently have been using a sprung disc and there is the option of a solid disc. Thoughts? I imagine that the solid disc will have more chatter, especially driving at low rpms in in paddock. Is there a significant gain in power to the wheels with a solid vs the sprung disc? Sometimes I have a long drive through the paddock with people walking and other cars moving and don't want to have to feather the clutch constantly.

Thanks.

Jim
