Oops!!! I broke a tap off...
First thing this morning while working on my Cobra, I broke a 3/8-24 tap off in a sway bar bracket mounting hole.
It is flush, nothing to grab. Who has the magic trick for removing broken taps???? Cheers and thanks, wicked fast :CRY: |

If you take notice of the design of the tap you will see that there is room in the sides to fit a half moon on both sides. You can get an extractor which is designed for the size. Check Msc or j&l tool. Also you can try to slip 2 drill bits in those sides and carefully try to hold both drills with a vise grip and gently try to turn it out. Use 2 small pieces of flat steel to clamp the drills. If it is really wedged in there and you can take the piece off look up in local yellow pages under machine shops. Look for someone that has an EDM machine. They can burn the tap out!! If all else fails send it to me and I will burn it out as I have a few EDM machines in my shop. No problem!! For the next time, use tapping grease if you weren't already.

This might work. Take a pair of fine needle nose pliers and see if you can insert the tips into the half round chip slots of the broken tap. Then use a pair of vise grips on the pliers to turn out the broken tap. I did this on a 1/8" NPT tap one time and it worked like a charm.

Call your local Snap-On tool guy they have tap extractors they are the three finger type that slips in the tap slots and try that go easy if that don't work we use to take some bees-wax and build a dam around it and fill it full of battery acid and let it set over nite the acid works on the carbite and leaves the other metal alone works on aluminum good also. Try An "Easy-Out" Tap Extractor...

During my time as a machine shop manager, I kept several "easy-out" tap extractor kits for those inevitable broken taps. Your local supply house should carry these kits. Just ask for an "easy-out kit." The previous suggestions might work, as well. Use your best judgment, and good luck. Regards, Tom |

It worked.
My tap extractor arrived from Walton Tool. Had to remove a chip of the tap, then the tool backed out the broken tap. check it out at: www.waltontools.com/products/extractr.htm Thanks to all for the suggestions. Cheers, wicked fast :D |
