went to view your pics and picked up "comet curser" - it's like a virus - you get whether you want it or not...didn't appreciate it...
|
Yeah, that stuff sucks info from your computer and publishes it out to them to use for marketing. Those guys suck. Sorry to piss on your post BJ, but that Comet Cursor thing is really really aweful.
One sure way to prevent them ever getting back in is to go into the windows directory and edit the file called hosts. There is no extension on the file at all. What you do is add the line "127.0.0.1 www.cometsystems.com" to the bottom of the file. That way, every time your browser tries to go to that site, it gets redirected back to your own computer (i.e. a dead end). |
Sorry if that caused you a problem. It has been on the web site for about three years now and this is the first time someone has reported a problem. If it is not operating properly I will of course remove it. First let me verify some information with you.
I had not actually checked it's operation in some time, so I just went back and reinstalled it. On my system, which runs Windows 2000, a large pop up box appears and asks "Do you want to install the Comet Cursor" or some such drivel, and offers a choice of YES, NO, or three hot links to more information if I don't understand what Comet Cursor might be. If I select NO, it goes away and I never see it again. If I select any of the information hot links it gives a somewhat lengthy explaniation about what it is and what it does. In order to get the cursor to install it was necessary for me to specificly select YES. It then goes through an install routine and puts the cursor up ONLY ON MY WEBSITE. In order to dispose of the Comet curser altogether, I had to open the Control Panel, select the Comet Cursor for deletion, and it was completely removed. If the Comet Cursor is installing itself on anyone's system WITHOUT THEIR SPECIFIC REQUEST or if the install instructions are not clearly understandable, please let me know so that I may remove it and avoid causing anyone undue problems. Thanx BJ |
went to the site a 2nd time based on your reply above and e-mail...I did not get asked - It automatically loads the program (again)...the only question I get is whether I want my new cursor or not...regardless of answer I've got the comet cursor program on my desktop...still don't appreciate it ...

Hey BJ. Glad you didn't take my post the wrong way. I wasn't trying to be an ass. I think what has happened in my case is that I at one time in the distant past had installed it to see what it was. After you install it once, it never asks you if you want to install it again, it just installs all by itself. I had deleted the installation, but any time I go to any site that has the Comet Cursor thing on, it will automatically install it. My fix does work for those who are irritated by it.
Wish I had the money for the car BJ. Good luck with the sale. John |
Good to hear from you!!!
BJ,
Hope we see you soon at a TCC get together. Do you still have the Digital pics of my Cobra and Vette from the ERA Car Show? If you do, could you e-mail them to me at either: keithw@connect.net (HM) kwilliams@aetrium.com (WK) Thanks and take care, Keith PS: I had the good fortune to ride with BJ at last years Austin bash and can attest to the fact it is really a nice car. At this price, it's a steal. |
Sorry Greg, I am still unable to duplicate what is occuring on your computer.
|
Sale pending.
Thanx guys BJ |
BJ,
My kids tell me that because I have McAfee Online my security files are configured to allow download of security program updates and that the comet software is following the path. Makes a shread of sense to me... Good luck on the pending sale. Greg |
