redline?

cant seem to get a good feel for the max rpm for my 390 big block. I was wondering what was a safe rev limit.

thanks too all.

who build the motor and was it dyno'ed?

around here we can get a car dyno'ed for $50 to $100.

the car was built out in vegas in the mid 80s. its a 390 thats been bored .030 over. hi pro intake with 750 pumper. tach has not worked since day one and is now fixed. I just drove it hard and by feel. I got all the bugs out this winter and dont want to float a valve.

Sounds like a "mystery motor" to me. Not knowing anything about the build OR builder I wouldn't take any unknown past 5000-5500 rpm on a good day. Most any big block is comfortable at 5500-6000 rpm for max HP. Good luck.

As much as I dislike MSD, I would suggest you install a MSD for the rev limiter protection and set it at 5500.

My 390 has cast pistons and i have turned it to 6k with no problems (yet) and its 10 years old.....

I think to properly find the rev limit of any engine, it would be a good idea to have it dynoed to see where the power starts to drop off. So, a little before the power drops would be the rev limit.

About 6K is the limit for my 428 FE..

Remember, at 6,000 RPM those pistons are going up and down 100 times per second. Is there a need to go any faster?

Back in the late 70's and early 80's we were very heavy in truck and tractor pulling. I used to build various configurations of FE's from 390-432 inches and spin them up around 9000 rpm +. When they made the "big noise" the results were catastrophic. When these engines went south you were lucky to salvage the intake manifold. I had 1 motor with lifters jammed behind the flywheel. I wouldn't spin one with stock type components any higher that 5500 or how much $$ you can afford to spend, or whichever comes first.
