Do you have a history on the car, IE: when built, who built it, ccx number, specs on engine, drive train, mileage (true), how many owners, etc. Do your homework as it will pay off in the end.

.... My advice would be to take your time and follow the ads for a while. Cobra country; this forum; the web etc if you aren't doing it already. I spent over a year following the ads, comparing features, age of vehicle, kit vs factory, etc. I found that there is enough turnover that it was fairly easy to develop a feel for value vs asking price. The other issue is to try to decide on the make of the vehicle. Once you have this narrowed down it will be even easier to make your own appraisal. When I was finally ready to make a move I was able to offer a fair price for my cobra and was able to back up to the seller the basis of my offer. In the end we both walked away satisfied, and I saved ten grand for my work and a righteous car in the process.
Happy snake hunting

Bob

Asking and getting are two different things. I would think that MM is a lot closer to reality than what they are asking.

after following the ads and posts for a couple years, driving a few, getting serious about owning one--i settled on ccx3818. in my opinion, holding out for the right car at the right price is crucial. i decided in this order: builder first, mechanical specs and general shape second, color third, owner history forth. one car make, many different permutations. mine checked off on all 4, and still i was able to negotiate a price FAR below the asking price. i think that like the housing market, the gap in perceived value is closing somewhere in the middle.

Make a reasonable offer on tbe car and you may save several $K. Anything over $50Kin todays market is dreaming or getting very lucky.

patrickt 06-11-2011 05:18 AM

On the other hand, Whiter, if this particular car is pretty much exactly what you want then a couple of grand in the price really shouldn't matter. Your only other alternative to getting exactly what you want is to pay one of the "big name" companies to build your car to your specs. Trust me, you will pay a premium for that luxury. In the long run, if you are truly bitten by the Cobra bug, then the fun you get out of this hobby is well worth the couple of grand that might make the difference between a "decent" price and the "I got a killer deal" price.
