Watts Linkage Hub Carrier For Contemporary
I am looking to add a Watts linkage to my Contemporary Cobra over the winter and would welcome suggestions on sources for hub carriers that have the bell crank integrated into the hub. CWI is long gone and Cobra Racing does not have stock on the hubs and will not for at least a "few months". Does anyone have set of Contemporary, CWI or Cobra Racing Watts hub carriers that they are willing to sell? Any other suggested sources of supply for this type of hub carrier? Thanks.

I believe "mickmate" (Nick) on the board makes a version that you can retrofit to your existing carriers, he will probably chime in, he usually does.

X2 on the Acton Custom connection for CCX Watts Linkage options, am currently updating CCX3057 with Nick. There have been a couple of lengthy CC threads on this subject as well highlighting the options and limitations on retrofits.

Thanks lads, Kevin and I were talking yesterday about this and he's doing a couple of things here. He's trying to flush out a set from someones parts inventory and we're also seeing what kind of interest or need there is for these things. I just can't shut up and quietly click on subscribe to this thread, instead I post ;-)

Do the Contemporary, CWI or Cobra Racing Watts hub carriers allow you to use either the existing inboard brakes or outboard units? I too amy be interested in some of these.
|
The outboard brakes can be used on CWI's, Cobra Racings and ERA's. The later Jag hubs can also be utilized to put the outboards on.
|
There is a easy conversion to outboard brakes on the Jag IRS, using the later 1995 onwards XJ6/XJ8 rear hub carriers, hubs, driveshaft splinned yoke, rotors and calipers. The later Xj8 (x308) V8 sedan has vented rea discs.

So what I am trying to do is convert to outboard disc brakes and add a Watts. Nick has an excellent Watts system for the older XJ hub carriers, but those carriers are not designed for outboard brakes. Then newer XJ hub carriers will allow for outboard disc brakes but you need to also change to the later hubs which require a special U-joint to mate with the older XJ half-shafts. Also, the newer hub carrier is a very different casting than the older hub carrier and Nick's current Watts bracket will not fit the new carrier. I have no doubt that Nick could make a Watts bracket to fit the newer XJ hub carrier with outboard brakes but before I reinvent the wheel, I just wanted to see if anyone out there had some of the CWI or Cobra Racing hub carriers that were designed for the older XJ hubs, could accomodate outboard brakes and had the Watts linkage integrated into the carrier.

Great looking car!! I have got alot of the same updates going on on mine right now. Namely, the Acton Custom Dash and Rollbar and one of Nick Watts Linkage setups soon! Good Luck, Mike

Thanks Mike - I appreciate the compliment. This car has been quite a project and I can't thank Nick enough for all of his help. It now has the Acton dash, rollbar, motor mounts, dropped pedal box / pedals, throttle linkage, hood prop, safetly loop, proper restraint mounts and lots of other nice touches that would take too long to list. I really love the look and stance of the car. I am working with Nick now to upgrade the front rotors & calipers and add the aluminum fuel tank. Once I get the details worked out on the Watts / Outboard discs, that will be the next project. One thing about these cars is that they are NEVER done. Fortunately that is part of the fun...

I would love to see some photos as the progress continues! I have a build thread on mine under the scratch builders section named Midstates Update. It's pretty close to yours but has the stripes.
Thanks, mike |
