FE and Holley Carb Queries
Hi Guys,
more queries for you. I have a Holley 4150 currently mounted the other way around from the norm ie vac pipe to PCV is at the front not the back. I have this way around because my car is right hand drive and it made the throttle easier to set up. I don't believe this is an issue? Any way the carb is tilted slightly forward so should I fit a wedge plate to bring it level? Also do FEs usually need a thermal spacer to stop heat soak into the carb? I decided not to fit my turkey pan. |
Hi Kev,
Why didn't you simply make the throttle linkage pivot rod longer so that it reached the other side of the carb? That way you cold keep the cab the right way round and pull the throttle rather than having to push it. I've just fitted a thermal spacer between my carb and manifold because I was getting heat soak in traffic in hot weather. I've had a custom filter made up by ITG to overcome the space limitations. Hi Paul,
to be honest I'm not sure, I still could I but I think I'd need another rose (heim) joint. How thick is your spacer? |
I think my spacer is ½", but it was enough to cause the chrome lid on the filter to make contact with the underside of the bonnet scoop, which is why I had the custom ITG filter made. I'll take a picture and post it up on here.
I wouldn't have thought an extra rose joint would be required as long as the two you have are located next to the actuation arms at each end. Paul |
You may be right about the rose joints I guess, but I think I have the linkage set up so that I'm pulling the carb open not pushing.
So as long as the carb being the other way around doesn't matter I think I'm OK as I am, I was going to put a PCV in the valve cover on one side (left) and keep the breather on the other (right). I think I may fit a phenolic spacer for good measure anyway. On a different issue can you remember if you needed to restrict your steering rack travel on your CCX to stop tyre rub on lock on the on the inside? |
I think the lower wishbone is the steering stop. :D
I didn't do anything specifically, but I seem to recall seeing rub marks where the tyre contacted the wishbone. However, you will never have the steering that far over at speed and it is only likely to be while manoeuvring in car parks etc. so I don't think I'd worry about it, unless it's an IVA issue. Paul |
Paul, IVA and MOT is my worry.

The carbs get a forward tilt to counteract the acceleration effecting the float levels. I think that will be fine. I made a PCV plate with a mounting tab for throttle link for Webers. I think that would work great with a longer throttle shaft and the carb the conventional way round. I'll dig up some pics if you're interested.
