Compomotives wheels with torsion bar

Hi,

I'm thinking about going down the path of fitting a vintage style tire which will give a more bulbous sidewall. My problem is that the front tire is already protruding further than I like, and it's only a 235/60/15" tire.

Is this as a result of the torsion bar suspension? Does the early Contemporary suspension have a different front track measurement to the later coil over?

Mine;

Other Contemporary Cobras with my HB500 Compomotives and similar wide-track issues.

Another Contemporary with a wide front track

It doesn't appear that there's enough material to be able to take 3/4" off the hub mounting flange is there? Has anyone done this?

Wheels Compomotive Halibrand style 5 lug bolt on - Hub mounting face.

Thanks

Craig

You will have to play with the offset............do you really want bigger than a 235 up front?....

Hey, just sell the Compo's and add correctly spaced 5-pin wheels...

I have been machining CCX wheels to correct the offset issues.

i bought mine from Bob at Vintage wheels. He had to machine them three time to get the set back right on the back wheels. The front were OK as received.

Jeff - I saw your car over here after Craig W bought it. I guess it's a personal preference thing; I loved how your car sat over the rear tires, in fact I loved the whole period style of your car, but I'd really like the front wheels set in even further. Do you recall if you still had some clearance at full steering lock?

Nick - I fitted some Billboards today and there's unfortunately no way that the Compo's have enough material to machine them down far enough. It looked like there was about 1/2" of material before the mounting flange sits flush, but I think I need a good 1.5" if not 2"!

There's no way I'm giving the Billboards back, so it looks like some new wheels are next on the list.

Dan - thanks for your input. I'll have to be super clear when ordering custom wheel offsets, because shipping to Australia gets expensive if the items are being shipped back and forth!

Here's a good shot of mickmate's latest handiwork using Trigo wheels on an early torsion bar CCX.

Thanks mate; that's really good to see that they sit in nicely, and that even with the extra space of the Trigo adaptor and the reduced dish of the wheel, the spinner doesn't protrude past the leading edge of the rim.

No worries, shameless plug, happy to be part of the R&D process. I think they look spectacular. BTW, these are Cobra Racing 6-pin hubs on XKE Series I hardware, not 5-pins w/adapters. Nick has the specs on the backspacing.

I just noticed your location. Contemporary Cobras are taking over the world!
I'd love to hear about your experience buying the 6 pin hubs, so I'll shoot you a PM.

mickmate 12-18-2013 10:30 AM

Hey Craig, I have copied some of my notes on the 5 pins with adapters.
Rear flange to flange measurement is 52-3/4” using bolt on wheel flanges and works with 15 x 9.5” 5 pin wheels and adapters with a 3.625” (3.25” effective with adapter) back space.
Front flange to flange measurement 52-13/16” with a 15 x 7.5” 5 pin wheel 3.625” backspace and 3.25” adapters.
If you really want to go 6 pin it is tough to find the hubs. If there is enough demand to run an economic sized batch we could look into that.
Bob at Vintage has helped a few CCX guys through the wheel dilemma and I have set up a few myself with Trigos in 5 and 6 pin. I have similar notes on seex pins (Aussie translation for ya mate) if we get to that point.

Never had clearance issue...
Full turning was not an issue, however if I had two fat guys in the car we could bottom out on big bumps... LOL

mickmate 12-18-2013 01:07 PM

That was the ride height and springs not the wheels and tires. I may have been one of those two guys on occasion.

750hp 12-19-2013 03:35 AM

Nick, thanks for the info. By the way, your translation almost sounded like a Kiwi accent, which would have been unforgivable! ;)
I'll do some measuring this weekend to verify exactly what I have. At this stage it's a decision between pin drives and just having the Compo front rims (hoops) replaced. That's the benefit of 3 piece wheels I guess...

Jeff, thanks to you too for the info. I have the non-height adjustable Koni shocks in the rear, so I'd need a spring change to get the back sitting down a little bit more. The occasional tire rub at the rear is worth it for the incredible look!

1985 CCX 12-19-2013 08:35 AM

Exactly what I did easy spring change. helped with smoothing ride and cornering as well.

Cheap and easy mod to make.

The back of the car should be at least one inch lower than the front. The ccx manual says the rear camber should be zero degrees (wrong). Lowering the rear will increase negative camber ( good ) and makes the car look like a proper cobra ( no ass in the air stuff ).
