Help with value
 

Hey Gang,

I was contacted by a Cobra owner and was asked to help with the sale of her late husbands Contemporary Cobra.

I am helping the widow of the original owner...so any advice you can provide is great. I know Cobras well but have not stayed up on Contemporary. Almost bought one 20 years ago...there are great Cobras!

Saw one just like that at the Hot Rod and Custom show in the sales area. It was in very good shape, 427 SO, 4 speed, etc.... and he had it listed for $28,500 I believe. It wasn't sold at the end of the weekend....

Personally, I thought it was underpriced so if I were you I would look where someone knows Cobras like Cobra Country but check sold prices as opposed to asking prices. Lots of guys have pie in the sky ideas of what theirs is worth, but buyers have different ideas...

I have checked Cobra Country and there are none for sale currently. I wrote Curt to see if he can tell me about historical sales.

2017 - $34,500
2015 - $52,500
2015 - $45,500
2014 - $47,000

2012 - $48,000

It will be interesting to see what Curt says but I am guessing a starting point would be high 40s.

The car has the Jag rear end and pin drive wheels, which is a plus to the purists. The speedo goes "backwards", so that's a big deduct. LOL Superformances, which tend to have a higher value than kits, are LISTED around 65K. All that said, it's still a crap shoot.
If it needs repairs, they should be made. If she is not in a hurry to close a deal, she can start high and see what happens. Being a replica, there is no accurate barometer for value. It's more a matter of seeing what people are willing to pay.
You have past price history. However, the parts and quality can vary greatly from one build to the next. When the economy is up, prices tend to be up.

Assuming coilover front and interior good mid 30’s would be reasonable.
More pics would help.

First it is the condition it is in (maintained), how well it was built, the parts used, and the reputation of company that produced the components.

My personal observation is that these cars get driven very little. They get upgraded and improved continually. Therefore they do not depreciate like a normal car. Again my personal opinion. Other factors are: is the company still in business? How hard will it be to source parts? What does a new one from the same company sell for today.

To make my point a Kirkham sold around $50K in 2000 and now more like $110K. Figure $15K for a drive train in 2000 and you would have had about $65K in it. Today that 2000 model is not selling under $65K. It will be priced $90-$125K. The price of a new Kirkham and it availability sets the price. Depreciation has nothing to do with it. Granted only a Shelby and a Kirkham can pull this off, but there are a lot that are very close.

It is human nature to learn something, then as time and interest fade away, you do not keep up with current events. Around here people tend to remember what a cobra was worth when they first purchased, and forget what inflation has done to money. They tend to think things are overpriced.

10 yrs of 3% inflation is 34.4%
20 yrs of 3% inflation is 80.6%

10 yrs of 2% inflation is 21.9%
20 yrs of 2% inflation is 48.6%

If 20 years ago a certain level Cobra was worth $20K, today that same car in the same condition is likely worth $30 - $36K. Just because money has lost value.

That all said prices around here may tend to be a tad low.

I have brought, sold , and traded vintage home stereo piece's from the mid 70's to early 80's (Wattage Wars) for many many years. What I found is : the correct price is what both parties are happy with :) Value for something that has no set price (Org. Cost, Cond. Service, History, etc) like these stereo's or our Cobras, again come down to both parties agreeing what each is willing to give or take. I've also found when you're dealing with someone that is selling something that has sentimental value for Goodness sake treat them with RESPECT! Please do not pick apart (While their standing there) a (Car, Stereo, etc) that the loved one had chariest forever, trust me I know this to be a fact, and you can still get a good deal. Common sense goes a long way on these deal's. Put your self in their shoes. I hope this help's in some small way. Cheers Tom.

Were I selling my Contemporary, I wouldn't start at less than $48K. Given the listed prices for Cobra replicas on several places on line, I would say that that price would be fair.
