Odd turn signal question
I have a Contemporary Classic Cobra from 1991. Odd situation this past week that I may need suggestions to check out. When headlights and parking lights are off, both turn signals work correctly. If I turn on the headlights, the right turn signal stops working. Left still works correctly. When I turn off the headlights, the right turn signal works correctly again.
All has been working well for many years. The car was built with a trailer light converter in the system. Should I suspect the headlight relay, the flasher, or the converter? Does anyone have experience with this issue? |
Sounds like you need a blinker relay?
Typical solid state versions work well and the original type, mine, work occasionally. :eek: |
What Jeff said...or get the witches out of your dash board... and the gremlins out from under the hood. I've never heard of anything like that!

Dan: does your Contemporary have the trailer conversion box in the wiring harness for the lights? Have you ever had any issues with it?

I suspect the headlamp switch itself is faulty in the headlamp detent since the trailer converter is really only for the rear lights.

Remember those front turn signal/running lights have two filaments per bulb. That means two positive wires running to each signal light and one ground wire running to each light. Try disconnecting all four positive wires and then measure for 12v+ on each wire with the headlights on and off when the signals are both on and off. Check with a VOM using a ground other than the ground wire running to the light itself. Always keep in the back of your mind the potential for a bad ground.

Sounds like a ground issue but the Contemporary wire harness was junk!!! Get a Painless wiring harness that is color coded and with GM weather tight connectors and fuse panel and toss that junk!

Just went through a similar situation with my 1990 EM. Turned out it was the trailer converter. They are getting hard to find so search the net and the ones that are out there are fairly cheap. Good luck.

I am not strong on electrical subjects but one rule of mine is if you have electrical devises acting goofy always start by checking for a good ground. |

That's why the classic first step is to disconnect the loads (light bulbs and trailer relay, yes the trailer relay is a load) and then test the positive wires going to the front bulbs with a VOM and a separate known-to-be-good ground, like a jumper cable going to the negative battery post. Then, assuming the positive wires are hot when they should be and not when they shouldn't be, you put the bulbs back, leave the trailer relay disconnected, and test the front end lights. If one of the front bulbs doesn't look right, or behaves funny for some reason, switch the bulbs and see if the funny look or behavior switches with the bulbs or stays with the socket. All testing includes putting the turn signal/running lights bulbs through their paces both with and without the headlights on. That's the first step and that tackles the front end.:cool:

Thanks everyone. It appears to affect both front and rear together. I will get into diagnosis as soon as possible but it may be a while. Lots going on here and this is a lower priority (to some people in the house :LOL:). I'll update the thread when I get a resolution. Thanks again.

Zimmy , check all the things that the guys are talking about.and also check the emergency flasher switch I had a lot of trouble on my 91 classic with turn signals a while back .had a short:CRY: with the contacts in switch,every time I used signal fuse would blow.Hope this helps Happy Thanksgiving to all on the Forum!
