Shifter rod spacers?
I have a cobra style shifter on my CCX with Toploader and 427SO. It also has a Hurst Competition plus shifter. The shifter rod has two bolts that go in straight down in the shifter, one front and one rear. It doesn’t sit flush when bolted in and had some washers as spacers on the rear bolt. Looking online it looks like the ]y come with spacers for the front and rear bolt? Does anyone know if there should be spacers and if so the height of each? The shifter ends up working itself loose after a very short time and I’d like to get this thing in right so it stays on.

Not following which bolts you mean, as I can't see any that go straight down into the shifter in any of the drawings. I do see the two mounting bolts that go L-R to attach the the shifter to the mounting plate on the trans.
I take it, the aft bolt mounting was shanking out (too long) and washers were added under the head? Or maybe the mounting plate bolts? If so you could pick up a shorter bolt or cut a couple threads off the the bolt. Gotcha I think, The OEM Ford shifter that has the vertical bolts.

Cobra Shifter
If my pic attached to this message, is this the same as your shifter? If so, I don’t use any grommets or washers under the shift lever. The washers were probably used to change the orientation of the shift lever, if not required, eliminate them. Also, the grommets are used for minimizing vibration at the shift lever, not required if not important to you. If you eliminate the washers and grommets all you need are lock washers and to tighten the fasteners properly and the lever will remain secured. If for whatever reason you wish to keep the washers and grommets, a liberal amount of blue thread locker on the fasteners should keep them in place and secure.

Trying to post pictures of the hurst shifter when I had it out. Definitely had a welded piece on the top so there was two horizontal bolt holes for the lever instead of the usual vertical bolts

My shifter is the same and has two bolts without grommets securing it to the modified Hurst shifter. Mine will bolt down flat but I have used washers and some blue loctite to angle it slightly for more clearance in my tunnel cutout.
I also have 66 Plymouth with a modified Hurst shifter and stock Plymouth Inland handle that secures with two vertical bolts in the same fashion too, and it has rubber grommets. I can see nothing that they accomplish. I’m not too sure they don’t amplify shaking in the shift handle. |
