427 Heads

I'm starting a build on a 427 and would like to know what are a good set of heads? I read alot in the past threads about BBM, Edelbrock, TFS, Shelby, and Robert Pond, also any opinions on roller rocker setup

I am using Survival Motorsport FElony heads and have been happy. Blue Thunder also makes high performance heads for the FE. I have the BT intake manifold on my engine.

I would use TFS FE Power Heads or Survival Motorsport heads

They all work pretty well for the use they were intended for. What type of use are you building your motor for, and what are your expectations?

My builder said TFS made signifcantly more power the the Edlebrocks.

The mild build is a 496 making 643hp.

My 520" FE dyno'd at 744hp with BBM heads that were not ported, only minor hand bowl blending. I believe Blair Patrick in TN is distributing them now, and he has a whole bunch in stock right now.

The car is street driven-no track - the bottom end is going to be basically stock with the original crank and rods with just a cleanup on the bores, the cam will be a roller. I would like to get around 500+ hp on the dyno. The machinast told me he has a set of Shelby aluminum heads, I don't know yet what he wants for them but looking at the price of the Shelby heads I can get a set of TFS heads for almost half the price. Also I have the Harland&Sharp roller rockers on my 428 and planning to buy that setup for the 427.

I'm going with the Edelbrock Pro-Port Head set-up on my rebuild and from what I've read and seen, I won't be disappointed.. All work on my engine including head package being performed by Blair Patrick.

BTW, he has been extremely helpful and patient with me on all my questions and couldn't be happier!

A good set of medium riser heads (with an appropriate cam selection) will provide excellent bottom-end torque, and it would be very hard for them not to make well in excess of 500 HP with a 427 cubic inch displacement. 550 to 600 would be more likely.

The BBM head is made in Korea at the aluminum foundry of a large Korean auto manufacturer. They employ the same if not better, foundry practices and capabilities that Detroit does — which means high quality, low porosity castings.

The BBM head also uses a modern combustion chamber shape/design that unshrouds the intake valve to help performance.

I don't think there is a bad head out there, although some castings can have porosity issues. The BBM head choice is a good casting with a good design and excellent power-producing characteristics virtually across the board. It sounds like you will not be doing things like porting, etc. That makes a head like the BBM head increasingly attractive because it works very well right out of the box.

Any stroked and bored FE will put down 500 horsepower on the dyno -- that's a piece of cake for any decent engine builder. And you can't use it on the street. Every time you punch the throttle your tires break loose. You can't hold WOT for more than a blink or two without risking your life. And under hood temperatures are directly related to your horsepower. Remember, the farther north you go past 500 the more finicky your car will get and the shorter the lifespan. The sweet spot for a street 427 car is down in the 400's.

The Trick Flow heads are the best off-the-shelf head out there, bar none. Unfortunately, they are backordered with no real ETA right now.

I have pulled them out of the box and assembled them with the correct valve spring for the application and have made ~670 hp with a 449ci engine.
