Unfinished Contemporary kit on ebay
|
What do you think guys. 9k and he still has a reserve. According to my old price sheet which is from 1980, it's about 7k in parts, plus whatever he paid for the suspension mine cost $950 doesn't look like he rebuilt it, just painted and bolted on. Looks like it will need the cowl hoop brace, hood and trunk hinges made.
|
Look at the torsion bar suspension, lack of body mounts, and the beat up rear end assembly all needing much work to bring it back in one piece. Looks like someone took the very base kit (no knock offs either) from Contemporary and started the slow process of a build. of course the tempting part is the drivetrain at 5K..But what would I know :D ....

This is a very early Contemporary body with square edges rather than rolled on the top of the doors andrough cut front flares. The top shock mounts are wrong and I don't know about those motor mounts. FE mounts would have a plate to bolt the Galaxy/Fairlane type mount to. Not your casual project :-)

Those engine mounts are 351C mounts.

Wow, this is a raw early body with nothing done to it. This is early as is mine however the openings are not even trimmed. There are a ton of missing parts as well, even some structural. Hope the buyer is ambitious as it will not be a deal based on the reserve. :(
Basically this is a frame and body with some of the suspension parts. Best of luck to him.....:) |

I questioned the auctioneer about the motor mounts which he said the "owner said" it is setup for a big block. The frame looks just like mine which is # 17. It may be possible that the early cars were setup to use Mustang big block mounts which should work,I used Mustang mounts for my Cleveland, they probably when with the Fairlane style mounts later because they weren't reproducing the Mustang ones at that time. |
It looks like he welded in a Jag rear and front clip without regard to ride height, geometry, etc..... You can see the rear coil overs have no adjustment left and his ride height is still way too high. Shelboss is right, the shock mounts are completely wrong for this application. In fact, I'm not even sure the differential is mounted correctly.
The chassis looks weak also, with only one cross brace in the rear and nothing forward except for the 2 x 4 cross brace in front that the steering rack is mounted to? I thought scratch building was a handful, but this project will be a nightmare to get right. IMHO, his starting price is way too high for what he is offering. No doubt some one will give him his price and have the skills to complete this Cobra but it wouldn't be me- at least for that price...... Bob |
I believe my kit is one of the first 5 prototypes from Contemporary, this looks like rev 2. I does not have the trailing arms but they used a piece of rectangulat tubing as a spacer between the round tube and the shock mounting shaft. Later kits used a piece of .25" steel plate. This would put the finished ride height about an inch too tall with the Contemporary springs. It's hard to tell with no load on the suspension what the finished ride height will be. Does anyone have stock Jag springs and Konis in the back and how is the ride height?
|
It must be worth something, it has a shelby sticker on the rear end.........:LOL:

I have the 17th frame produced and when I was building it and it had the Jag springs in it, it sat pretty much at the same height as when I put the Contemporary springs in it. Even just as a rolling chassis it was never that high. My#0000017 frame has the same box spacer and I also have frame CCX33961 which does have the .25" spacer. Something is weird why this car is sitting so high. I just went over my price sheet.
Body(unworked) & frame $4895.00 Windshield (frame w/glass installed) $700.00 Wind wings $92.00 Hoodscoop $36.95 Front bumper $175.00 Rear bumber $175.00 Total $6073.95 Plus Suspension He is asking to much for this. This is a very early kit they offered in the beginning without the cowl substructure, it was still listed as an option later was included with the body at an additional $1700.00 on the price. |
How do the doors hinge and the steering column mount without the cowl hoop? Did # 17 have trailing arm mounts?
|
You need a cowl hoop to mount these things plus it supports the body. I was just mentioning that that one on ebay didn't have one and it would need to be fabricated. No #17 did not have trailing arm mounts.
