Temperature
Can any one give me an idea of what Temperature a 64' 427 would normally run in summer weather? Mine runs about 190 but if I'm stuck in traffic ( plenty of that in Chicago ) it can push over 200. When I get moving, it drops back down.
At what point should I be concerned? |
Sounds like normal behavior Jeff. Use a good quality oil and don't sweat it.

depends on your thermostat and cooling capacity
It should run at least as warm as your thermostat rating and the cooling system should have the air and water flow capability to remove the excess heat. Common shortcomings that we see are underdrive pulleys,small fans, poor grounds and electrical system that doesn't have capacity to run the fans You should be concerned when it is 200+ and going up Jerry |

I running a 68 427 s/o with about the same reading temp. wise as you. I have double fans in the front but in 90 degree plus temperature and stopped I see the 200 mark and beyond as well. I am looking at a larger core radiator or better primary electric fan which pushes more cfm the the one in the car. I am also looking in to a shroud for the primary fan that may cover more area and better direct the cooling. Ralph |
An excellent fan to use is the one off the Viper---has about the same cooling job to do and is readily available at a chrysler dealer

I've had the Cobra 14 years. During the first 3 or 4 years I experienced the same temperature spiking you described because I just had the 2 pusher fans in front of the radiator. As stand-alone units they are less than adequate for me in stop and go driving. Once the temp reached 200 degrees, it began ratcheting to higher readings faster than I was comfortable with. I eventually mounted a 16" Spal puller fan behind the radiator. My temperature concerns vanished with this installation. My choice was the Spal fan. Other brand rear-mounted pulling fans will certainly work well to overcome the limitation of the front-mounted fans. David |

Since I dumped my radiator anti-freeze and added 1 bottle of Redline water wetter my temperature has gone down noticeably. I would be interested in knowing model of the SPAL fan you have installed. Thanks.

My 428 runs about 200 degrees in the Phoenix 110 ambient temp this summer. I wouldn't worry about it until it pushed over 210. That (210) is normal operating temp with a 185 degeree thermostat. Running a single, shrouded, puller fan which is much more effeicient than dual pushers.

Least expensive solution providing everything else is working as advertised, Water Wetter with distilled water and a minimum amount of anti-freeze. Add a shrouded puller fan and you should be good to go.
Not as elegent but can help: Put about a 1" foam block under the back of the hood to increase air flow around the engine. DonC |
This is the Shelby Spec Fluidyne radiator and 16" Spal straight blade fan. I added the RH lower bung for the fan switch. The lower outlet is altered a little for my particular application. Works perfectly.
