Steering wheel removal
How do I remove the "AC" center cap off the steeringwheel?

It is only on via friction fit, gently pull off with flat tool. |
It depends on whether you're going to replace it with something the car doesn't like. It might be hanging on to it for a reason................

The AC caps where held in by three "Jesus" clips that, as the name implies, can be easily lost if your not careful. Without the clips, people have used silicone goo or duct tape to retain the cap. It is supposed to "pop" off by prying. The clips are made from unobtainium.

Thanks, I have 1/4" plus play in the column. Seems like there should be some sort of bushing or something behind the wheel on the column shaft.

Hey Drew what car/column do you have? If you can get someone you trust to smack the shaft down with a hammer and brass punch while you pull up on the wheel. Have the wheel nut loose but still on there, it protects the threads and your nose.

Drew, I went through this with my older Contemporary that I am restoring. It was built in December 1983. My column is a MG column, and I had lots of play in it too. Like you I couldn't get the steering wheel off either. I ended up removing the whole column from yhe car, which isn't nearly as difficult as it sounds. Once the column is out, the whole inner column simply slides out of the outer column sleeve with the steering wheel still attached. I had lots of play in my column too. Assuming that you have an MG column like I do, the upper bushing is plastic, and the lower bushing, believe it or not is just some heavy felt that the lower part of the column rotates in. Both parts are available from Moss Motors on the internet. PM me or Email me if you need more info.

Thanks for all the advice. Got the wheel of pretty easy. One bolt in the center and the shaft is splinned to accept the wheel.
