Toploader input shaft bearing about to go bad?
When the engine gets hot the transmission starts to make a grinding noise in neutral that dissappears when the clutch pedal is pressed. the warmer the engine is the louder it gets. I suspected the throwout bearing but I also have a gear whine in first, second and third gear that goes away in fourth when there's little load on the input shaft bearing.
I jacked the car up and let the engine run in neutral while using the "screwdriver stethoscope" and the noise seems to rather come from the gear box, not the bellhousing. Is anyone familiar with the symptoms? This especially sucks as I completely rebuilt the Toploader less than 4000miles ago, AND I installed new gaskets last year to finally get it to stop leaking (without big success). At least I still have the dummy shaft in case I'll have to drop the cluster gear for replacing the bearing... Simon |
I vote for T O bearing.

There is also less load on the front clustershaft bearing in 4th gear.
My bet is input shaft bearing or front clustershaft bearing. |

I want to get the most heavy duty version of the bearing from a reputable manufacturer like SKF.
I still have the old bearings from the rebuild to take measurements, but which one is from the input side? I suspect the "bigger one" on the left (#6209N) Can someone confirm this? |
