slow to engage first

My toploader is often slow to engage first gear on the downshift. With full throttle, 1-2 is often slow or even missed. You can run through 2-3-4 as quick as you like all day but not 1-2. No noise or any other indication of breakage. The shifter is hurst (indy I beleive) and the linkage was modified with a kit from Unique so the shifter sets much further forward than would otherwise be possible. This does not change hot or cold.

Suggestions?

Thanks

Rick

Thats because on downshifiting the weight of the car plus the wheel are turning the engine makes for considerable resistance in coupling the first speed gear to the speed of the main shaft. Pretty normal when shifting from 2nd to 1st.
