Gear Ratio in toploaders
I will be rebuilding my toploader in the next few weeks - Naturally David is the source for the parts! - Looking at his site , I noticed a 2.90 first gear is now available - got me thinking, exactly how are the Ratios determined for first gear in the toploaders - Wide Ratio - Input 23 teeth - Cluster 30 teeth - First gear 32 teeth - I'll be the first to admit I was challanged in math class, so I would appreciate an explanation on the method of determining how you arrive at 2.78 - Thanks very much - Ed

Wow - 35 views and no answer - I guess I was not alone in daydreaming in Calculus class

I for one don't understand the question exactly, NOT that I could do the math if I did! :D
Wide Ratio: Input 23, Cluster 30, 1st gear 32? Now, how many gears does it take to make 1st gear work? Sounds like THREE? Mine only has two, input and cluster... :JEKYLHYDE |
You can comtemplate something too much,ya know.A 2.90 first sounds great.I went from a CR to a WR and with 3.27 gears it made "it" another car.A 2.90 would be close to perfect.
And yes,David did the work. |

I would think it takes all 3 to make up first gear - Input shaft 23T must rotate which in turn rotates the cluster 30T, which in turn would rotate the first gear 32T when first gear is selected - Correct me if I am wrong. |
Huh??? :D I thought the input shaft and first gear are one and the same?
Boy am I lost... |

Oh yeah! Having major DUH moment here. Now I see where your coming from with the math and calculating THREE gears.
Uh,,, good luck with that. :JEKYLHYDE |
(30/23)*(32/15)= 2.7826 std wide ratio
(25/23)*(32/15)= 2.3188 std close ratio A toploader transmission is a double reduction gear box so you need four gears. |

Tom, You must have been that one fellow paying attention in math class - Thanks for the info, Ed |
I can't find any mention of a 2.90 1st. on his site. Is this a fact??
As I have a aluminium T/L on order & I would like to have it if available. Craig |

2.44 / 2.90 First Gear DK296-41A $125.00 5.000 lbs 33 Tooth first gear can be used in all wide and close ratio Toploaders to lower the first gear ratio. In a wide ratio Toploader first gear will change from 2.78 to 2.90. In a close ratio Toploader first gear will change from 2.32 to 2.44. If you want to have better low end performance without changing the rear end gear ratio this is the perfect solution. The cluster gear does not have to be changed to use this gear. |
Thanks Ed,
Don't know how I missed that. My jaw is still smarting from it slapping me in the face.( something about the forest & trees ) What does the 5000 lbs refer to?--tensile strength? Thanks again Craig |
cobrabill
I did the same--3.73 C/R ---3.27 W/R works great! The 2.90 1st. will make it perfect for launches & city traffic. Craig |
I believe that is just the shipping weight for the individual gear when ordered.

Duuuuhhh, Thanks Scott.
I gotta get new bi-focals---didn't see the little dot in the 5.000 lbs. Never thought for a miniute that someone would divide a pound into thousands If we were talking Kilos that might have entered my pea brain. Craig |
