Flat Chrome Hurst Shifter Replacement

I have what I believe to be the Hurst 427 Cobra Shifter from David Kee with the non working reverse lock out on a David Kee toploader.

Does anyone know the part number, if there is such a beast, for a replacement Hurst flat chrome shifter stick that will bolt onto the existing shifter and still give the same or close to the geometry that the "mustang" look alike shifter stick provides?

I've got the same question. Most of the aftermarket [Mustang style] stick vendors are pretty vague about weather their shift handles will simply bolt to the Hurst two bolt 4 speed Competition Shifter base that are designed to accept the flat Hurst shift handle.

Just buy any shifter you want and cut it and weld it to your base. Your weld will be below the shifter boot.

My fabricating skills almost dictate opening a box and bolting on the ordered part. Question still exsists but thanks Tim. Besides, I've been called lazy to boot.

That will be my "default" activity on this quest. I just wondered if anyone else out there had ever done the swap as a bolt-on, since there are so many of these cars running around with virtually the same set up. Seems to be the easiest route to go. With the various selection of Hurst sticks available, it's hard to know which configuration will be the one that gets closest to existing.

Go on the Hurst shifter forum and ask the question. Maybe you'll get an answer. Probably some stock early Mustang shifter turned around (backwards) is what you want.

So here's what I ended up doing....First I found the Hurst stick layout charts on their website and found a replacement stick (No. 6836) that in part had the same geometry as the Mustang shifter (approx. height and reach).

Then I cut off the portion that bolted to a stock Hurst shifter and welded it to a CNC machined part that replicated the Mustang base I had made by a local machine shop in approx. the same alignment as the reversed Mustang shifter ( I let it sit a little more vertical than the reverse Mustang so it would clear my knee a little better)

I found that the stock rubber dust boot hindered the shifter somewhat, so I went with a leather boot to complete the look. And it shifts a little smoother and in a more natural line than the Mustang stick. It's what I had back in the 60's and I love the look.

I kept the Mustang stick intact so I can simply bolt it on in the future if I want a change of pace....
