I don't know about smog checks for your car down in Miami, because whae we sold a grand national down there we ha to have it sniff checked first before his loan would go through, but if you don't have to worry about that then. I had to have a form signed by either a clerk of the court to come out to the parking lot and verify the mso vin number matched the number on the frame, or have a police officer come out to the house and verify the mso vin number mathes the number on the frame. I then went down to the tag agency with the verified form, my mso that listed how much the base car cost, because everything else you added, ie: wheeels, engine, transmission, etc you paid taxes on as you bought them, and an insurance card. So for my Superformance it was about $2000.00 for the price of the car, based on the mso price I think of around $36,000.00. Hopefully that should be it, but just go down to the tag agency and ask. The ones I worked with here were very helpful, but then again, it always helps to be courteous, and explain what you are doing, and that you want to make it as easy as you can for both sides. Probably plan on making two trips, and bring a magazine to read while in line.

I'd suggest that you get an original title from something in the 1965 range. For example, my car is registered as a 1965 Ford Roadster up here in Gainesville. Since I'm registered as a 1965 I never have to worry about smog, seat belts, etc.

If you look in the back of just about any Hot Rod magazine, you can find companies that sell registrations for cars of that era.

I will admit that once you understand the process it seems like it shouldn't be legal, but welcome to the Florida DMV loophole.

According to my friend that works at the DMV they basically don't care because they get so few like this it's not worth their time to really crack down on it.

If you use your MSO, you will be titled something like 2003 and if you have pollution control, as I understand it you have to pass if you are newer than a certain year.

As with everything, my area my not be the same as yours, but this should be relatively statewide. Your milage may vary.

Florida actually has fairly detailed instructions on their website. Here are the ones you are probably interested in. Titling a Replica in Florida You should probably know that Florida recently changed their procedures and replicas, reconstruction, and kit cars are titled in the year they were manufactured/assembled. I guess that would be 2003 for you. For Floridians, the title year should not matter since emission testing was stopped in Florida.

Florida titles the car in the year it was assembled, i.e., a 1965 Cobra is titled as a 2004 Cobra if you assemble it this year. While this might not cause problems right away, I'm not sure what happens if you move to another state, e.g. a 2004 production car "standards" (emissions, etc.) are certainly different than a 1965 car "standards" in Virginia.
