It's gone.... It's all gone.
My hard drive decided to quit working on Tuesday afternoon.
Everything is gone... All my files, DSCC member list, Reptile Roundup files, contact list, everything.... Do yourselves a favor and back up your important files. I wish I had. Ruble has a copy of our member list but I am not sure if he had been keeping it updated. Crossing my fingers. I feel so stupid for not making a copy.... Arrrrgh, so much data lost forever. If you have changed addresses, emailetc, please send me an update so I can update our old list. This sucks.... Ed |
Geez Ed, it doesn't take an engineer to back up your fricken hard drive.:p

There are places (computer geeks) that can retrive (some) data from crashed hard drives. Check around. It may work in your case. Call local computer shop.

It might cost a few $$$ but there are specialists who can recover data from even dead hard drives.
Just mention a little too loud in front of your neighbour that all your porn is lost & the FBI might look for your files for free! |

Backing up data is a hassle no matter how you do it. I've used and use several different methods, don't like any of them.
Old school was "tapes" and "floppies", that really sucked. New school is CD or DVD, better, not perfect. I like the "dual drive" method myself. TWO hard drives identical to each other, C and D. I work on C and "copy" important files to D. I tried the "image" and "mirror" thing, I find it easier just to "copy" and often "over write" the old stuff with the new stuff. Dual hard drive, as easy as it going to get. |
I have a copy for you and I keep it up dated thats why we have more than one guy with the files on their computer. I'll email it to you.

For anyone looking for a fool-proof backup system try the Maxtor OneTouch system. It automatically backs up changed files every night without me doing anything. If I change something critical I can initiate an immediate backup of everything with one button.

I've been wanting to add a second hard drive for along time as I have also lost my hard drive before but it hasn't happened yet. Actually I want to make an exact copy of the hard drive in my computer and then unplug it so nothing can take it out of the picture and use it to reinstall to a new hard drive if it dies. A copy job would be a lot less fustrating than trying to put a new hard drive back up and running as it was before the crash. As far as what is in my computer it's only a toy and, Ed will be back up and running and send me a new copy of our membership list as I'm doing for him right now.

If the drive still runs but has become totally inaccessible, I've got some software that might retrieve your data. It worked on Kay's - we were able to copy 98% of her stuff over to another drive before trashing the ill one. If you want to send me the drive I'll be happy to try to get some of the stuff back for you. If it has quit rotating all bets are off :CRY: Tom |
As mentioned above, a good geek ought to be able to retrieve the stuff (albeit possibly one file at a time), and as Tom notes, there are programs out there to help. Don't give up.
One of my attorneys just had his go down in his older laptop, but a local geek is retrieving through DOS. Luckily, we copy from our laptops to our main secretarial files for all documents, but his work in progress was almost lost. Good news is that I just got him a new Sony. We've tried all kinds of backups. The best and easiest way we've found, especially for laptops is simply getting one of those 1G external memory stick thingies that plugs into your USB port. Quick, easy and much more compact than a CD. I keep alot of my pics in RAW format, which takes up huge amounts of space, so I have a seperate storage thingy for them. Like Ernie, I have a C and a D drive in my Sony laptop, so I keep all the pics, videos, etc. in the D drive so they don't jam up any operating systems and text files in the C drive. Too bad, Ed...it's a pain the a$$ when that happens. |

Try putting your hard drive in the freezer overnight. quickly plug it in the next day and pull your data. This works approximately 50% of the time. |
