Any recommendations for an agency to cover my new BDR? I expect to have it in a couple of weeks and just got a quote from Classic (linked to CC) that limits mileage to 1000 miles/yr. That's ridiculous!:eek:

I just switched to American Modern. The reason is that they now allow you to drive a clasic to work. All others that I checked do not allow you to drive to work. It was about $50 more but I felt is was worth it.
You can choose 3000 or 6000 miles/year. This is the agent I work with. Great guy to work with. Robbin R. Terry, CIC Midwest Classic Insurance POB 229, 110 South Fifth Street Auburn, Illinois 62615 www.midwestclassicins.com 1-888-271-4000 1-217-438-3347 (fax) |
I am an agent for Grundy and they will insure the car, as they did mine, for "declared value". If you pay $60,000 that's what you can declare. They will also forward a certificate to the AZ DMV giving the car Clooector Status exempting you from emissions and enabling registration as a 1965.

I also went with Midwest in NC. I ended up saving about $200 a year. There are some restrictions though, which I can live with. The restrictions are < 3K miles a year and no routine driving such as to store or to work. Not a back-up car for commuting and such, and no tracking the car. In other words - just for enthusiast driving, which is what I do anyway. That's why I didn't like what I was paying - too much for as little as I was driving! Herkypilot |

is what i estimate i will drive this year, i may up it to the 3000 for next year american modern has different underwriters depending on the state your in. |
Talk to Robbin Terry W/ Midwest
He knows cars and can find the right carrier for your needs. I was very pleased with the prompt professional service.

Ralph...there have been a fair number of extensive threads about this topic within the last year...go do a search and see what else you can find. One of the more reputable firms recommended was actually State Farm, and they are my insurer...no mileage restrictions, full coverage, but I have been with them for 25 years or so.

Big ditto on Robbin. He recently wrote coverage on my car and I am very pleased, with Robbin, with the policy, and with the premium.

My ERA is on the way, so I just contacted my American Modern agent, who I use for my other old car. I want a policy to cover me while I'm building the car. He told me American Modern is no longer covering Cobra replicas because they've had a lot of claims. FYI.

Ditto for Robin;
Call him direct for your Cobra. Robin knows cars and made life easy. My regular auto and home agent didn't want my car. John |

American modern vs Robbin Terry
I had american modern on the car prior to completion. I finished the car, and recontacted to get full coverage. They said my Kirkham with a 427 was worth $60,000 max. I argued with them, sent them to the Kirkham site, etc. They would not budge. Their underwriter suggested an on site apprasial.. I paid $300 for a licenced appraiser, he took pics in person, found comp cars that sold, contacted the car owners and verified sale prices, etc. Sent the completed appraisal to american modern. The new joker on the phone said they do not use appraisals to set value on cars, so did the head underwriter. $300 pissed away.
I called Robbin, he said I didn't even need the appraisal. Valued the car at $110,000. Spent a few bucks more, got a heck of a lot more coverage. Switched the fleet of collector cars over to Robin, and saved a good bit with multi car. My cars are through Infinity now. Very pleased with service. Never had a claim yet, hope never to. Paul |
Ralph,
Check out the insurance sponsors on Deep South Cobra Club - Home and ask for the club discount. Larry |
I spoke with Robbin per some of the other recommendations here. He said American Modern does in fact insure Cobras and he can write that policy, but he uses Infinity because it is as good and cheaper. It seems the agents do have a lot of discretion. So I will get a basic policy while I am building the car, and lower the deductibles once it's on the road (whenever that may be).
