ERA Starter Switch
 
Bob. My (ERA 718) starter key switch seems to be going bad intermittently. What would be an acceptable or better quality replacement?

Mine went bad too. It's a “Universal Ignition Switch” ACDelco Part #D1460 (#12339178) but with a custom bezel. The bezel actually costs more than the switch.:p You have to file down the bottom of the porcelain "triangular" separator for it to fit behind the dash lip. Other than that, pretty straight-forward replacement. I've had no problems with the replacement; the original was twitchy from the get-go.

Do I have to go to a GM dealer for that, or does a NAPA/Advance Auto jobber have a generic copy?

This is kind of stupid, but is there any equivalent out there... that has a better key?

I guess I'm just used to the massive, chunky things that come with newer cars, but the Cobra keys look like something to open a dime-store trinket box. I even went to a full-service key shop to see if they could find a blank with a chunkier head on it... no go. (I have some really nice Pony keys for the Mustang; makes it feel as special as it is. I also have the original pair of dealer keys we were handed...)

I guess what I'd look for is a switch that will fit in the same hole, either uses the same bezel or doesn't look too off-era, and has a key for which I can get a nice, hefty aftermarket version... something that LOOKS like it controls a 500HP beast. Later-model Jag, maybe?

I'm not sure what the thread is, but if your car didn't come with it, and you want it, just give Bob P. a call. It's probably $50 or so I'd bet.

No, I have the correct piece. I'm thinking it would make a dandy gearshift knob locker if it's the right thread. :)

Unfortunately we have to rethread the switches to match our bezels. :CRY: The switches that the bezels were designed for are no longer available so we were put into the situation of having a pile of bezels that had become expensive ornaments. Fortunately, it's not hard to rethread the switches, which is our situation now.

I have had the same problem with the ignition switch in my GT. Left me stranded at Road America just before going out for some "Touring Laps". Turned an inexpensive switch into a very expensive one...

I'd like to have an on/off key switch with separate start button, just like cars from the thirties.

That's about a 45 minute job. Putting an extra hole in the dash is the most time consuming part of the job -- if you mounted a hidded switch under the dash it would be even quicker. Put the button in the ignition switch hole and the wiring will take you 5 minutes, it's that easy. Bob P. has a drawing of it on the ERA web site, but you really don't need it.

I wonder if a standard Ford ignition switch would fit - repro Mustang stuff. The bezels are even similar. That would open the door to some nice keys.

The 1965-66 switch required a pigtail and the bezel system is meant for being mounted in metal with a locator pin -- so it could work. -- you would need ;

ign switch(motorcraft)
ign lock set (standard)
ign bezel set (Drake)
