Return Springs for Jag E-brakes
Hey guys - I need some help.
I'm building the rear suspension on #778 (Jag type) and have these two coil springs that hook to the actuating levers for the emergency brake on one end. The problem is I don't know where the other end goes. It looks like I should drill and tap a hole in the subframe and put in a screw to anchor the other end. There's no mention of these parts in the ERA manual and I can't find a photo showing where to anchor them. Thanks for your help!::) |
778,
I have an early car so we may differ-but I don't got no stinkin' springs.:) Which may be why you're not seeing it in the manual. The handle is a simple ratchet pulling a cable which then pulls the mechanical clevis'. Releasing the ratchet relaxes the cable and the brakes release. Here are recent pics of mine. If different than yours, post a pic. Bob will be on here to advise soon. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...02_Medium_.JPG http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...35_Medium_.JPG http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d.../6_Medium_.JPG |
This is my first try at attaching a photo and I'm not having any luck.
I've found the springs in Jag manuals, etc. but of course the frame is different. ERA shipped them with the rear end hardware, so I thought it would be best to install them. I'll keep trying to figure out the photo attachement process. |
Does you cable and clevis system look like mine?
|
Yes, the cable and clevis are the same. I have the smaller original Jag brakes, so that may be important.
|
Mine on 722 is the same as Chas's except I don't have all those extra pipes/tubes and my shocks, springs, rotors are different.:D
|
Here's a pic of mine done up on the bench. If you look close, you can see I have the springs attached to each end. I think they just stableize the adjuster.

Get a couple of small clamps with rubber insides
ERA Chas Chas I don't know how much you use the parking brake but poor idea with wireties to the brake tube. The park cable moves everytime you apply it and will rub on that brake line. It could also snap the line off the caliper. The line should get a couple of small clamps to stop vibration also and prevent it from hitting the differential. Just trying to keep you safe.:) Happy Holidays Rick L.

How we do it:

It looks like that from the angle of the pic but the cable is not zipped to the hardline. That is a 'rub strip' where the engaged cable comes close to the pinion flange. It's 2" away when the flange is turning My first pic shows the rub strip made from fuel line, only without the zips. It's just zipped to the cable. Appreciate your concern. It's worked fine since 1985... Bob, You guys (which always means just you:CRY:) should create a 'TSB' page on the ERA site showing all the updates from 002 on up to the present. I've done the majors but found out about those by 'word of mouth' over the years. I know I don't need these springs as the e-brake always releases cleanly. But the aluminum rad, Tilton masters, big brake fronts and ventilated rear rotors were all sure worthwhile. Doing fine without the wiring improvements however. Besides, we all know you need more to do around there...;) |
There are a bunch of changes that I don't know about, and some that probably don't deserve the term "update". The major ones have been listed here on the site for many years.

Yikes! If YOU don't know-gulp-just don't let Peter make any!!! |
The changes are minor stuff, like the guys in the fab shop changing the location of the seat holes by 1/2" to make things fit better. Or I'll make a color change in the wiring harness so that there's less of a chance to make a mistake. (Or a change in what we do to accommodate a change in an outsourced part.)
If we make something in-house, there's nothing like improvements that come up from the bottom. |

Thanks. - Tim ( did not mean to hijack the thread :) ) |
There have been no significant changes to the FIA. Perfect from the beginning.
Except the change from a copper radiator to aluminum some time in 1997. |
