Larger Wheels
I read that Superperformance/exotic replicas now has a 18 inch wheel that is wider and you can fit larger brakes (6 piston) within the wheel. I know they were 5 or 6 pin. Does anyone know if they would fit a era cobra? Would be great to have a 335 rear tire on 18's and a six piston caliper. I think it was also a 14 + inch disc too...
Any thoughts or facts on this? |
The limitations are maximum rotor width (1.25"), the depth in the wheel for caliper clearance, and how much you want to spend on a custom hat. Our "stock" hat has only a 8 x 7.0" pattern for the rotor attachment: too small for any 14" rotors that I could find. The biggest rotor that I could find to fit that pattern was 12.72". A custom hat might be $500+ for the pair.
Some 17" notes My guess is that the selection of 17" tires is better than 18". The maximum widths (tires and wheels) mentioned in the link above are... the maximum you can put on without rubbing. |

Great link. It appears the best way to go if you want to go wide and big is the 17 inch wheel in the back at 335. Also, am I reading this right? But you could go with 13 inch brakes in the front? This would be great with either 4 or 6 piston calipers.... |
Yes, the 335s are the maximum that will fit in the rear.
With the 17" wheels, there's plenty of room (diametrically) for up to 13.5" rotors. It's just a matter of the side clearance that the caliper requires and how much you are willing to spend for a custom hat. |

A custom hat? Do you mean the calipers, the wheel or the part that is bolted to the brake and holds it to the hub? I've heard this expression but I'm not sure what it means? Custom hats, what would something like this cost? Does anyone run something that is more commerically available versus having it custom made? |
Hat: The adapter between the hub and the rotor.
There may be a standard hat available, but only if you're using bolt-on wheels. It will take considerable research. |
