Wheel torque and fan sounds
Hi,
What is the torque recommendation for lug nuts? Have new 17 inch wheels from Vintage Wheels. Also, radiator fan makes sound as if there are leaves stuck, but I do not see any. Should I keep looking or is this the sound of old age (15 years)? Thanks. |
Check for "Leaves" , damaged blade or bad bearings/bushings in the fan motor. Rated torque for 1/2" wheel stud is approx 80-95lbs.

Thanks. Confirms what I did with the wheels, 75 pounds front and 85 pounds rear. Got new wheels as I more or less gave up my year-long battle to get street tires for my 16 inch wheels. Still have them, perfect Compomotives, now with new Goodyear Eagles 245/50 in front and new 275/45 Hoosiers in the back. Will continue to work on the fan. Have had some experiences with other "older" cars -- 30 years and thereabout, but have never had a fan motor go bad.

new fan mounting
Replacing my cooling fan - mounted in front of the radiator -- it is held in place with nylon ties. As far as I can tell, these move only one way through the radiator (once they go in, they do not come back out again). Can anyone tell me - best way to remove them is to snap off the heads and pull them through from the inside? Never done this before and would be nice to accomplish without screwing up.

It is not odd. If you go to Summit or JEGS, you will see the mounting kits with nylon spikes. There are instructions for how to install, but not for how to get the old fan and the nylon spikes out. But I think the way is to snap off the heads and pull through as I suggested above.

I don't recall ever seeing an ERA with an electric fan installed with "ties" in front of the radiator. All of the installations of a single electric fan that I am aware of have been on the back side of the radiator.
Alsom switching the wires can change the direction of the airflow. I would make the simple switch of putting the fan on the back side of the radiator and making sure that it is "pulling" rather than "pushing" air. Do you have another fan on the back side of the radiator? Jim |
Very early cars (> chassis ~100) had the fans mounted through the radiator (always on the back side). After that, they were mounted to the top shroud and the bottom tray through vertical brackets. We had very few problems with the pins going through the core, but it always made me nervous.
I wouldn't consider safe or reliable using the through-the-core method with the aluminum radiators we currently use. |
I will look at the alternatives, but have had one single 16 inch pusher fan in front for the past 12 or so years we no problems.
