Exhaust clearances
Hi all.
When the time comes, the first thing the compliance/registration boys check here is exhaust clearance. Must be 4" minimum. Fail this? "Au revoir" So if you feel inclined to get the tape measure out this weekend, can you give me figures for minimum exhaust clearances for 289FIAs, and also for reference, 427s, for sidepipes and also for undercar exhausts. There are some cars with undercar exhausts exiting in front of rear wheels. I'm interested in these as well. Oh - assuming standard suspension setups and 15" wheels, too. As usual, many thanks! Glen,
I have my exhaust tucked up pretty close. I had to "notch" the floor supports a little and I believe ERA does this on the current production cars (maybe). I used mandrel bent 3" tubes and turbo flanges. I made my side pipes with auger mufflers and they sit dead even with the frame rails as far as height goes. NOW, the only thing that I will point out is that when you do this there will be more heat translated into the frame and surrounding structures. So use reflective materials or heat barriers next to the floor boards or they will get pretty warm, very warm! It can be done, just takes more adjusting than normal. BUT, I don't hit to many speed bumps with them!! Good luck! Matt |

So it’s underfloor, and no lower than the frame rails. I don’t know the architecture under the floor as well as you do….when the pipes come out the side in front of the wheels, do they have to bend down at all and do you lose any clearance at that point? Can you measure it when convenient? Cheers, Glen |

Glen, The side pipes do bend down slightly, maybe 1/4" down but not much. The measurements are 4 1/4" at the end of the pipes. You could jack the car up some to get it through inspection and then lower it afterwords;) My pipes are very tight like the originals and I actually enjoyed making them. I'm not a big fan of the under-car exhaust. They're just isn't enough body materials to hide the mufflers. I'd post a pic but I still can't figure that one out yet! PM your email address and I can send you the pics that I have. Regards, Matt
