Steering Play
I have a little play in the steering, which I have located. It's at the slipjoint half-circle (flattened) steering shaft coming through the footbox.
My questions are: Is there supposed to be something (bushing maybe) there? Is there anything I can do to tighten it up? Or, do I just need to replace either the steering shaft or the flattened part. ERA154 Thank you, Jim |
Perhaps the small flat bar that tightens the joint with the two through-bolts is deformed. Flip that bar around. Perhaps the flat section of the shaft is deformed, slide the steering column in or out a little so that the flat bar is tightened on fresh section of the shaft. There is not a bushing in that slip-joint, at least with the ERA column.

If your car is using a Triumph column (fairly unusual), there is a center bolt in the clamp that can can adjust the tightness of the joint.
With the ERA column, check for wear on the flatted shaft and on the clamping plate. You might be able to compensate for wear by flipping the plate the other way. |
I believe it is the Triumph column, as it has blinkers on L and headlight dim on R.

I agree with all of wolf's comments. I just had mine all apart a few months ago to fabricate a detachable steering wheel shaft. Hopefully you can squeeze in the footbox enough to check it out. It's kind of in an awkward location. - Allen. |
