Thanks - pretty much my conclusion. Looking at Patrick's picture that carb is really up a lot higher than mine are on this old 427 low riser manifold - but I'm using a smooth hood. The expansion tank on mine sits higher than the carbs. I'm a little concerned about the tank but when I measure it according to Bob's illustration in the manual I'm just under his measurement a little (assuming his measurement doesn't include a cap on top). I bought the tank off of an ERA owner so I guess I'll find out when I put the hood on.

The front, right side of my expansion tank just barely rubs against my hood when it is down. There is no room to spare.

Do you have your driver side motor mount bolted through like ERA suggests? I think I'll carefully test clearances with some clay before I fully lower the hood but even then the engine is going to move a little. I guess I could raise the transmission mount up slightly to drop the front of the motor a bit. It's pretty much right on Bob's recommended setting right now.

Thanks

Just don't get a cap with a pressure relief lever on top. They're too tall.
Get the old style like this:

Yes I do. And I'm thinking that the torquing over may actually lower that point on the expansion tank. It is the very forward tip of the passenger side that just barely, barely rubs. That's a Blue Thunder MR intake, btw. Your LR is bound to be slightly different in how it positions that tank and be wary of the cap.

Yes-through bolt the mounts. I de-laminated mine at the drag strip. It can cock and jam your throttle linkage if it goes over-besides things hitting under the hood.
Don't be rushing to shim big things-your car's no different than 6 or 700 other ERAs. Assemble and see what you've got first.

An expansion tank that has the cap on the carb side of the tank (towards the rear) will allow you more room for the cap than that POS that Chas has with the cap towards the nose of the car.:p

Yeah - it seems like there are a thousand little, individual assembly jobs at this point and I tend to dwell on each one and try to perfect it and not miss anything important. But I managed to miss shaving the corner off of the throw-out fork. Mine looks like it's close to missing the clutch cylinder but I can't be sure until I get fluid in it and try to cycle it. And then out comes the dremel or cutoff wheel probably.

But, I did put a bolt through the motor mount anyway.

Thanks

That's a good point.

From memory I think the cap on mine is towards the rear. I'll have to check.

Mine are at 3.5 degrees. FYI these carbs have side hung floats and every so often I could flood it by turning too sharp or stopping too abruptly. So I bought some stainless tubing from McMaster and made taller vent tubes and that problem is all but gone.

How come your picture looks like the angle is so much less than that of Chas? Is it an optical illusion?%/

FIIK. My car squats a little more in the ass and I think Chas' car was slammed all the way around.

patrickt 06-22-2012 04:01 PM

Well, I need to buy a new tool and an angle gauge could be just the thing.

Jim's is a MR dual plane intake used on street. Mine is a single plane MR TW-Dove. Designed for drag cars. Dual planes (like yours) need room under the carb (s) for overlapped passages.
I'm yelling at Jim:
PUT A DOUBLE RETURN SPRING ON THAT LINKAGE LIKE POST #19.
The Throttle Spring Safety Police have spoken.:MECOOL:

HAHAHAA I was sitting here WAITING for you to say that. When I put the new carbs on, I moved the second spring over to the passenger side, but didn't like the bracket so I removed it THIS WEEK. Car has NOT been driven since and won't be until I finish deciding how i want to do it. You b1tch3d at me a couple years back about this when I first got going, whaddya think I am hard-headed????
