Side to Side "Klunk"
I have ERA 134. When I make a vigorous turn to either right or left, I'm hearing a "klunk" noise from the rear of the car. Could this be the baffles in the fuel tank?

A hard klunk like a sledge hammer on an anvil would make me think differential or rear suspension. A tinny klunk would make me think fuel tank.
Can you lean against the rear quarter and work the car back an forth and make it happen. Does it do it when low on fuel and when full? John |

Look in the trunk to see what tools you left sliding around in there;)!
If you lift it, are the rear suspension components all tight? |
Well it took me a while to get back to working on this problem. Thanks for the suggestions. So far, no "junk" in the trunk, can't make it make the noise by pushing against the sides. Got the left rear wheel off today and measured .010" in/out movement in the hub carrier. Shattered my plastic deadblow hammer on the right rear knockoff, so I'll be ordering the American 6lb. lead hammer as suggested in another thread here. The saga continues.....

I was able to get more done yesterday and today. After removing the right rear wheel, I measured movement in the lower outer pivot at .010" left side and .015" on the right side. is this excessive? This is measured with a dial indicator at the top outboard side of the wheel mounting surface.
Also, While looking things over around the differential, I found the shim at the lower left rear loose and the right was missing completely. Reinserted the left shim and replaced the right shim with .060" shim and tightened everything. Test drive, still clunks. Filled with gas, still clunks. Is the movement noted above excessive? Should I rebuild the lower outer pivots? Is this even something to be concerned about? Help! Larry |

Check for a loose rear swaybar while the car is on the ground or a four post lift.

I have an early ERA car, does the same thing. It is the float in the tank, no worries.

When wheel lifted this play is Normal with Jag unit. The upper arm is the driveshaft. You Should measure the play the weight on the wheel. I agree below that you Should see the condition of the lower reaction bars. See Also brake calipers. |
A clunk kinda....manifests itself, or maybe more like a clicking if the sideshafts come slightly loose at the rear inboard disc mounting. Put it in gear with the park brake of and rock back to front . John

I found the source of the "klunk"! The baffle assembly in the fuel tank has broken loose and is sliding around. Now to find a welder that will fix this for a reasonable cost.

sounds like a new tank is in your future. welding repairs on a previously used gas tank. in my neck of the woods, are a hard sell to any welder.
its not the welding but the KABOOM that'll get ya... |
