Locating the Alternator
My 351 has a Canton oil pan on it. The dip stick is housed in a flexible tube with a tab for mounting. Mine is zip tied to the strut that comes down from the cowl to the front suspension upright.
Today I took off the alternator and found a couple of tapped holes in the head which conveniently locates the tube much like the originals. Unfortunately the alternator bracket on my car is much too short such that the alternator has to be rotated inboard. Below is a picture of my alternator location. Notice how far inboard mine is. http://www.cobracountry.com/cobra4sa...b-1080x810.jpg This is CSX2246 notice how far outboard the alternator is. I have checked several CSX cars and they are all set up this way. http://www.csxinfo.net/web/modules/x...P1010065-1.JPG Is there a bracket available like the one on the original or does it have to be fabbed. I have checked several CSX cars and they are all set up this way. x-chr |
It dawned on me to check the originality forum - oh boy. At least we have something to work from.

I'm pretty sure that the alternator will interfere with the upper control arm pivot shaft if it's mounted that far outboard.

I have the same alt location you have on my ERA633 with a 351. You have to trim the sutd off the back of the alt a little but the the dip stick does fit in the stock location. My car has march pullys andd brackets. I hope that helps.

here's a 351 with the tube between the alternator and head. i used one of the holes in the front of the head and bolted a tab to hold the tube. those are march pulleys, don't know about the bracket. just have to be careful the tube doesn't ground on an inappropriate lug on the back of the alternator:D
