Windshield wiper mechanism noisy
As I posted in my build thread, I got all the electrical stuff not associated with the engine working. The windshield wiper mechanism is quite noisy. I greased the rod quite well when I installed it so assume this is normal? You'd never hear it with the engine running, but noisy without engine noise to cover it.

In 27 years, I used the wipers exactly twice-to demonstrate that they functioned at inspection.
I did NOT use them in the few downpours I got caught in-the water was inside the glass. Leave well enough alone.

Chas, I agree with you that I'll likely only use them for inspections, so I don't plan to mess with them trying to make them quieter. I'll probably even remove the wiper arms after the inspection and store them in the trunk. Still curious if the noise is normal.

Keven - there might be something wrong - I was actually surprised how quiet mine were when I ran it a few cycles (no blades attached). I greased mine also so other than some sort of mal-adjustment at the wiper pivot I don't know what would cause it.

Usually the noise comes from the connecting tubes at the end-flares. Sometimes the tubing gets distorted when the flares are formed. The noise will probably decrease over time. If you're obsessed, the system has to be disassembled and the inside of the tubes filed smooth.

Thanks for all the input. I will leave it alone, was just curious and Bob's explanation indicates it isn't something that would cause them to fail. The mechanism does seem to operate smoothly, although I haven't put the wiper arms on to see that for sure.
Besides, Chas and Patrick would obviously think I'm being silly if I spend another minute on this. :JEKYLHYDE

In seven years I have turned my wipers on exactly once, and that was just to see if they worked. They did. I haven't turned them on since.:cool: |

I would expect the same, but when I put something together and it isn't quite right, I do have an urge to fix it. Reminds me of the navigation system I put in our daily driver. It has an optional hookup to the speedometer for when you're in a tunnel and lose satellite reception. It continues to track your progress. Of course, hooking up this wire required tearing out the instrument cluster to get to the back of the speedometer - hardly worth the effort. Who really needs GPS in a tunnel? Anyway, you can guess what I did...

I think you guys know me well enough at this point that you wouldn't be surprised that I'd probably fix it. Along with making sure the writing on my air vent knobs is horizontal. Just sayin.

I take my car on long road trips, and every time it seems to rain. The wipers work great with the top on. They are reasonably quiet.
Wipers are useless without a top. The water gets on the inside of the windshield.
I would fix them, it would be easier now than later.
Be careful with my advice, my wife says I am wound to tight.
