Richmond 5 speed and 2.88 rear

Hello All, I am currently saving my loot for a ERA 289,etting close. i am also collecting parts. i have come into a real nice Jag rear that is a 2.88 with LS.
i would just like your thoughts on small block with a Richmond 5 speed and a 2.88. the car will not be raced or autocrossed. thanks

redmt 11-10-2013 03:08 PM

That's a pretty steep gear. I have some 3.54 and 3.73 w/ a trac loc carrier for cheap.

kanuck 11-10-2013 03:17 PM

That would give you a 9.41 first gear total, sweet
2.88 X 3.27 RMG 1st = 9.41
4.11 X 2.32 CR toploader =9.53
3.73 X 3.27 tremec =12.19 early superformance had this setup makes first gear useless
3.45 X 2.87 tko 600 =9.90 much better
you will like it, I had a 2.76 with that set up
anywhere between 8 and 10 is good

I have the Richmond 5 speed and 2.88 rear ratio in ERA2041, with a 380 HP 351W . It works well and the gears are nicely spaced. However, the gearing is more suitable for high speed cruising (5th gear is 1:1). I think it turns around 2500 rpm at 80 mph, and it gets too windy above that to suit me. I drive mostly back roads, and very little highway. The car does not pull as hard from a standing start as I would like. If I was doing it over, I would definitely get the Richmond trans, but with a 3.08 or maybe 3.31 rear.

I have a 2.88 lsd, with a Jag 4 speed with Laycock overdrive......it equates to a long 5th gear........2000rpm at 80....very comforrtable as a driver....

ERA 778 11-10-2013 06:08 PM

I have the RG 5 speed with a 2.88. The engine is a 428 FE that dynoed at 520HP at the builder. It works very well for the street and will blow the doors off almost anything in first and second gear. The first four gears match up very well with a wide ratio toploader with a 3.54 rear, so it's a lot like having an overdrive fifth gear.
My problem would be that all of the RG transmissions now are made in China, I believe, since the tooling was sold about 2 years ago. I hope i don't need any major parts in the future!

Thanks everyone, I did not know the RG are now made in China. That defiantly gives me reason to rethink my set up

What power is your motor making?

lumpy3339 How much power is your motor going to make? If you are going with a 5 speed, anything over a 3.00 ratio is a waste. I have a Richmond 6 speed and never used 1st gear. My race trans has a 3.05 1st gear and never use it. This is with a 3.31 ratio. I also have gone from a 452 FE to a 482 FE motor. I am going to a 3.07 ratio. Here's the thing, I have 500+ ft of torque to move my car and then some. SB make good HP in the middle to upper rpm range. They are soft on low end grunt to get rolling. 2.88 is also an odd ball rearend, Yes I have 1 for parts. Was looking to do the same thing with a wide 5 or 6 spd trans. Found out the dana carrier is good for only about 450hp and torque. IF you are going to cruise, you want the motor to be running in the sweet spot of torque and bottom edge of HP, about 2,000 - 2,300 rpms You should talk to the motor builder and see what camshaft you guys are looking at. IMO you work be better with the superstreet Richmond and the 2.87 first gear and .87 fifth gear. Have you thought about a t-56 6 speed? Not sure if this will fit in an ERA frame without modes to get it to work. My frame was custom to allow a 6 spd richmond to fit. Its 1 inch longer than a 5 spd. If you are going into parades, get a 3.00 or higher first gear for slow driving. I think the richmond 5 spd would work out just fine. Kissler has worked out all the problems on the TKO trannies. Only guys racing are still having problems with shifting. Good luck Rick L. Ps everything is getting made in China. Live with it and thank the goverment we voted for. They sold us out.

lumpy3339 11-11-2013 06:39 AM

Thanks Rick, I am building my motor with some assistance, the cam profile is mild and the target HP is 400 at the crank and ~383 foot pounds. I am going to go with the Richmond 5 speed, living in Michigan I will keep looking for new old stock or a very good used RG. The information on this forum is great

CHANMADD 11-11-2013 09:54 AM

Yep.....The Salisbury LSD is much stronger..........

strictlypersonl 11-11-2013 11:20 AM

A lot of the choice boils down to the engine torque and the torque curve. The engine must be comfortable at "lawful" highway speeds, and the driver must be comfortable with shifting down for a little extra push when necessary. A mild 390 might work where a tweaked 454 might be unhappy with the same gearing.

CJ428CJ 11-11-2013 03:57 PM

I've got 2.88's with the Richmond 5 speed and my build is a lot like ERA 778's (a 428 with about 500HP). With a big block, that combination is nearly perfect. You could plug the numbers into a calculator and come up with specific RPMs at specific speeds but as i recall, mine turns about 2700 RPMs at 70 or 75MPH. That's right in the sweetspot for my cam. For my build, the gear spacings and cruising RPMs are perfect. \

My 488" FE is running a Doug Nash (Richmond) 5spd with a 2:36 in the rear. It is just right for me, but I don't race....just street driving and cruising. The amount of torque available makes the difference in pulling that high a gear.

DanEC 11-12-2013 07:28 AM

Wow - a 2.36:1 rear - I haven't heard of anything approaching that since the 80s when Detroit was trying to milk mileage out of the last of the V8 full size cars. And then I don't remember one that low. That must have a heck of a pinion gear in the diff.
