Stripes
In the ERA FIA manual I noticed that the stripes originally tapered from the windshield forward. This taper was minimal, but I still can't picture exactly what it would look like. Has anyone done this or seen cars with the tapered stripes.

Thanks for the advice. I guess we're gonna go with that, except silver with laser red stripes. I haven't seen a cobra with that color combo yet, so hopefully there won't be until we finish ours. thanks Glenn jr |

I think that will look really nice. I haven't seen one like that yet, and I see a LOT of Cobras.
I think I was probably one of the first with Laser Red body color; it really worked well on the curves of a 289 FIA Cobra. Saw a CSX4000 car at SAAC 26 in Laser Red, it just didn't "turn me on" like the FIA. I studied a lot of stripes, and, of course, in the sixties, there was a good deal of variation on the stripes, as many were dealer or customer applied. The stripes on the ERA (just like their body shape, and all the details) look "right" to me. Good luck with your car! regards, cobrajeff |

I notice that your fia has 427 side pipes. Is this a proper modification of the fia car? I like them much better than than the other type of exhaust you see on the fia cars. h dog |
We aren't going to put the stripe across the front. What we are going to do to make it different is go with red seats, red door panels, black dash, and black rug. Also no roll bar. It's gonna be such a safe car.%/

Thru body pipes not stock on FIA

The thru the body 427 style pipes were not used on original FIA cars. I figured it was a replica, so I'd make it the way I like it, which included the FIA bodystyle (with cut-back doors), with a few 427 style appointments. 427 style items included the thru the body exhaust, rivieted-on hood scoop, LeMans gas filler in RR qtr, and rear-braced roll bar. I liked the looks of the rear-braced roll bar and riveted on hood scoop, and thought the gas filler (further away from me), and side pipes (better ground clearance than under-body FIA style) were more practical. The pipes required frame modification to the ERA FIA (may not apply to another manufacturer's FIA kit). I also went with an unusual engine - a 351C - the "big" small-block (THAT necessitated foot-box modifications). Had to have the Webers, too. It sucks gas, but, what the hay, I don't drive it every day. regards, cobrajeff |
On cars that don't have the stripes tapered (i.e. straight), it appears that they are actually wider at the ends of the car, because the car narrows. ...or something. One of them there optical illusions... I understand the Greeks* (not the Turks) apparently figured this out awhile back... that some times, to look straight, things have to be crooked... or is that the other way around?

Close analysis of one of your post, regarding the stripes, has Greeks,and Turks and the word "straight" used in the same sentence. Do you want to re-write that and put at least a paragraph or two between the word 'straight" and 'Greek". The admittedly somewhat obscure reference is to the Doric columns on the Parthenon built in the 5th century BC on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece; that to appear straight the columns are actually curved and narrow somewhat toward the top. Otherwise the columns would appear top heavy. Furniture makers often taper the legs of tables and chairs to make them appear more graceful and less heavy looking etc. etc. Now the Greeks may have invented the concept... but then again they may have simply stolen the idea from the Turks...
