submarine belt installation
Bob,
Does the ERA FIA have a captive nut under the drivers seat for a 5th point
belt/submarine belt? Thankyou.

Mine on ERA2041 is not captive. Just a large washer and nut. The nut is partially under the muffler, but accessible by feel without jacking up the car.

You may choose to use submarine belt you sit on and a strap is not directly over jewels. I would post pictures of sand car and cobra but I need my son to help as I lack the skills. You could goggle sit on submarine belts and hopefully get pictures?

I have a question. Should the submarine belt wrap up and around the bottom of the seat or should there be some sort of opening in the seat that the belt should go through?

That sounds very painful. What advantage does the sub belt provide over going without it? Seems to me it would be difficult to come out when just belted up with the standard ERA approach.

If you have a submarine belt then when you tighten up on the shoulder belts
the seat belt stays put and does not ride up as you tighten the shoulders. This
is, of course, secondary to keeping you from sliding under the belts in a crash.

I want to do this on my non FIA car. I have the belt and Doug gave me a print making a mounting point out of 3/16x1x17 cold rolled flat stock. This is suppose to go between the seat track mounting points right against the floor and the seat tracks then get re-installed on top of the metal attach point. It looks like the mount that was posted earlier!
The problem is that I am having is finding the metal, everybody seems to have the hot rolled and not the cold rolled. Can I just go with thicker hot rolled metal like 1/4' to make up for the strength loss by not using the cold rolled.

The sku for the piece at McMaster Carr of the cold drawn is 8910K264. It is a nice, general purpose, low carbon steel, cold drawn (more strength than cold rolled). The rest of your car will rip to shreds before your crotch tears a hole through that piece of steel.:cool: |
