Remote Oil FIlter - how much to mill from Water Pump
 
I'm collecting some parts in preparation for the next ERA.

I have a nice shiny FE that I plan to fully dress in preparation for the car build.

Having put a remote filter on my last ERA, I know that one of the water pump bosses needs milled so the remote filter doesn't lean forward and the filter contact the X brace.

Can you tell me how much to mill off? It would be much easier to do this before the engine goes in.

I used the Shelby remote oil filter and brackets. I milled the bracket, not the water pump, and seem to remember taking off about 1/8". You can wait until you get the engine in and measure it.

Newbie here.... What is the motivation for having a remote oil filter? I've just put down a deposit on an ERA 427 s/c kit, and I stiil have time to make changes to the build.

It is a cool factor as much as anything else. Also, I think it makes the plumbing look cleaner to have it and an oil thermostat.

I wouldn't run an oil cooler without an oil thermostat.

Well, after reading these instructions, I'm just going to make a wild-ass guess and say you probably need to grind off about 3/8" from the boss....:rolleyes:

Lippy,

I plan to use the ERA bracket or the one from Finishline. Both are welded steel and aren't thick enough to mill. So I will need to mill the water pump.

Thanks. If you read further in the manual it notes that another area will need milled and the information is supplied separately in the instructions that come with the remote filter. "The water
pump may require modifications to the bottom mounting
boss (instructions included with cooler kit)."

I made the mods on my last car and know which areas, but can't remember the distance.

I have my oil cooler installed but capped off. I've run the car in 98 degree weather with no cooler and the oil still doesn't get that hot. I wouldn't mess with the complexity of the thermostat. You'll never need the cooler unless you race but it does look cool.

Same here, I ran mine for awhile with no T-stat and the oil was never warm enough (even in Vegas on 115 degree days), so I added a T-stat, and it still wouldn't get above water temp, so I just recently capped off and rerouted, eliminating the cooler. Now oil temp will get to around 220-225, good temp for me.

Nine months, including queue time, the build, bonding the body to the frame, and paint locally in CT.

I picked up my turnkey ERA Slabside #3010 28 June 2014. I placed my order and deposit in November 2013.
