Starter Issues 2
So my Robb MC starter lasted about a year and is now making odd noises. I ordered a new one so that is in process. Things to note:
1) Factory OEM starters likely will not work on early Shelby Blocks. They are too fat and the block gets in the way. 2) Powermaster 9406/9506 will not work on Shelby blocks due to the lack of adjustment with the solenoid location, i.e. hits headers or block. 3) CVR's may work, but they do not engage into the flywheel enough unless you mill the mounting bracket. I am trying a couple of others for fit-up tomorrow and will report my findings. I guess there are some disadvantages to a Shelby block. I would like other options than a Rob Mcc as it seems to lack HP. If I am wrong on this, please correct me....Ugh... Phil |
I use a Tilton severe duty starter on my shelby aluminum block, on my second one now but
the first one lasted 16 years through 4 engine builds. You could drive it into the trailer on the starter. |
Great, do you know the model # or part number?

I believe it is Tilton 454-54-40013 and it is clockable to fit your application. It is 3 HP so will crank anything, my engine is 15 to 1 and it spins the heck out of it.

Large Arbor,
Did you check out the Powermaster that you can 'clock'? It 'll fit. I think it's called the 'Xs'. |
I think I tried the powermaster and it was blocked out by the headers. I will be looking at it tonight to see as I am stopping at Jegs on the way home to survey options. Looks like the Tilton unit may be an option too.

I have the Powermaster 9403 on my SBF. It is clockable.

Ok, so I stopped at Jegs and matched up a MSD Dynaforce 5093. Put it in cranked it. I then pulled it back out and just looked at the contact and it looked great. I did not need a shim. I put it back in and ran an extra ground cable and tried it a few times and it worked great. It was not a cheap started but it seems to have no problems turning the engine over. Now I just have to clean off the headers from my grimy hand prints, but I will wait till it cools down for that. Thanks for all the advice and I will report back in a few months.
